Dear All,
OK, This is an oddity to me... Any ideas =).
On HP Pavilion DV2000 of the variety with Intel graphics,
trying to use 64bit Debian Wheezy, for example, just won't
recognize the (apparently supported) onboard intel graphics,
instead using the VESA driver which is a pain.
The PCI devices:-
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00
[VGA controller])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30b2
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30b2
NB: I NOTE that these are somehow TAGGED as HP devices in 'lspci -v'
above...! Also, their actual IDs:-
00:02.0 0300: 8086:27a2 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: 103c:30b2
00:02.1 0380: 8086:27a6 (rev 03)
Subsystem: 103c:30b2
NB: Looking about at other people's lspci for 945GM chipset users,
they seem to have 27a2 and 27ae instead, no '27a6' as above.
I've even rebuilt the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver and changed
the PCI IDs its' expecting as above with no luck.
Relevant bits of xorg log:-

Fatal server error:

======================================================================
Also, kernel log doesn't tell me much... Upon reloading the
'i915' module the laptop lcd brightness resets, but the 'dmesg'
log doesn't indicate explicitly that mode-setting is available
or a PCI device was actually recognized at kernel level.
Have tried a newer backported kernel 3.11.8-1~bpo70+1 with no
apparent effect.
I notice somebody else supposedly had the intel driver loaded in
x.org and then get no screens on similar laptop:-
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1451007#post9101092
And, I've not got far finding out exactly when this happens...
Now...
(a) Is it known for HP to mess about with ids/presentation of intel
bits so they don't recognize easily -- or otherwise are you having
VESA driver on some other intel chipset integrated graphics machine?
(b) Is there something else going on here?
(c) How would I debug this further? -- add more warnings/printouts in
the driver code that appear in log, maybe ????
With many thanks in advance,
--Simon
