What is the DVD (a remix, LXF disc, full distro etc)

, (having successfully installed it into my laptop)

So its not the DVD.

So what were they or was there so many you cannot list!?

Try again with just the one drive connected, just in case something is
upsetting the install.

If the DVD works OK then maybe make a USB stick to eliminate any DVD
drive problem.

Do a memtest for a few hours

Answer the questions (if it fails to load non grub files there is no
point in just trying to sort Grub.

Hello David

The rescue system only has one login which is username "root" with no
password. This will drop you to a shell prompt so probably isn't helpful.

I would try booting the install program again and selecting the "verify media"
option. This will ensure that the optical drive can successfully read the
disk. If it can, rerun the whole installation. You should get a message saying
there's an existing install and an option to upgrade or repair the existing
installation. The upgrade/repair should install the missing packages.

If the installation fails again, leave the install at the "fail" screen and
use the key combination alt-ctrl-f1 simultaneously to switch away to one of
the other virtual terminals. alt-ctrl-f2 will switch to terminal 2, alt-ctrl-
f3 will switch to terminal 3 etc. One of the virtual terminals is used to log
messages from the install. With any luck, this will have some information on
why the packages failed to install.

If the media validation fails, then you'll need a new disk

I've had good results against broken Grub installations with the Boot
Repair Disk at
http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/

In my case, it fixed it so that everything was visible and bootable
again, then I could check it was correctly done - and it was.

I can't answer this as all my emails are in my laptop which is away for
repair/

There were several lists and they were in small windows so I couldn't see
them all at once to list or copy.

I can't run one drive without opening the whole PC to physically remove one,
and without grub, windows can't start. I have no way of distinguishing the
two idential drives from each other and since grub doesn't run, I can't run
windows anything.

Impossible without the machine running any OS

I can't access anything! Its just frozen with this grub message.

I'll try the install again. To list the fail items, I'll have to photograph
the screen, as there is no way of printing directly from this pc, only over
the house ethernet to my own desktop pc, which of course, won't happen from
a frozen linux OS (and the pc's own HP printer hasn't worked for years so is
a dead loss!)

I downloaded the file, but since EasyCD failed on my pc, I now have no
means of writing an iso file to a disk. Only copying in the normal fashion
sometimes works. This "iso" didn't.
