I just feel compelled to comment; it really depends on what kind of music
you wish to create. For me there is nothing anywhere like as useful as
Csound; it does not constrain the sounds and with a little glue code I can
write the weirdo stuff I like. I know there are people writing
techno, jazz, pop, .... but as ever "Your milage may vary" etc etc

I have used Rosegarden to help write a string quartet and a pop song in
addition.
