Try asking a well worded question.

Like, "What is the best distro?" that's short, to the point and well
worded =)!!

and maybe "How is it we have over 270 on the list and get only about 3%
at the KT"!

So that's what the masses do all day. I suppose I will have to learn
this all if I ditch my old Nokia for a smartphone!

Some of us (who were infrequent attendees at best) have moved away from
the Bath and Bristol area but stay on the list out of sheer
bloodymindedness ;-)

Hi Dave!

The irc channel is majority ex-pat lurkers, most days.

You get a 2 part answer, based entirely on my own perceptions and feelings.

My own personal problems are paralysing social anxiety, coupled with
typically late nights on Friday and the fear of being consumed by a
large unix-beard in a wetherspoons. Imagine that in a eulogy or on a
gravestone? These are things the UG can't fix. These are my problems,
not yours.

Actually it would be kind of awesome to be suffocated by RMS' or Alan
Cox's beards... Or perhaps insulted to death by MJG.

However, as someone who has lurked on this list for at least 5
years(maybe longer?), perhaps a bit of background of how I perceive the
UG meetings will explain why I don't appear post frequently or appear at
meetings -

I work for a small MSP and have to do a fair mix of "true" sysadmin,
support and internal development work. At least a few times a month I
work 6 days a week, or perform research at the weekends, because I enjoy
most of my career and the people I work with. It's because of this when
it comes to my day off I don't really want to do break-fix support (i.e.
"my wifi has stopped working", or "help me install a SSD and migrate my
data"), which I don't enjoy any more.

The description banded around on the website and the mailing list over
the years suggests that's a core component of what the meetings are.
It's for the same reason I have no interest in helping out at an install
fest.

I have no issue chatting about the controversy of the month (i.e.
Debian's systemd vs sysvinit vs upstart), getting started with kernel
development, the security implications of adopting docker, etc. That
stuff I find interesting and it can be largely opinion based, or
orientated around something that I don't yet know enough about. But user
support? Helping out those who /appear/ to run a consultancy supporting
Linux? No. I have enough of my own shit with co-workers and clients, thanks.

TL;[DW]R: Fear and loathing.

Hi Karl

Just to give you an idea how little we actually get support issues at
the LUG meeting's, the last time I remember someone going for support
was the August 2012 meeting, and I have been to most of those meeting's
since when I started going in I believe March 2012.

Also the person who went for support came quite far, after emailing
about his issues to the mailing list, and me being like ok sure if you
come along you might be able to get help.

We don't have anyone who's anything like Richard Stallman coming to the
LUG meetings, maybe in the old days before I went, but not when I have
been going.

We have a few people myself included who would like
opensource/freesoftware to go more main streame in general coming to the
meeting's, but also people who don't really care about that, and
probably quite a few of those really. However also at times people who
are quite knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, but that don't really
want to provide people with support at the LUG meeting, which I think is
fine since it's their own personal choice.

It's a informal pub meeting and personally I think it's great to get a
mixture of different types of Linux users there, and the more the better
really I think. For someone to enjoy the LUG meeting they really don't
need to be some really sociable people person by the way, it's just a
few guys going for a drink and chat etc at the pub who are interested in
Linux basically, with women being completely welcome to come along as
well. I suggest to you and others who may read this who are able to
come along to a LUG meeting, but that aren't sure about coming along to
the LUG meeting or coming again, to give it a try, and you may find that
actsually you quite enjoy it. We also have a meetng coming up next
Saturday the 23rd February, and I plan to send out a more detailed email
about that on Monday. The LUG meeting really is for anyone with an
interest in Linux basically, even those who don't really use a Linux
distro as their choosen OS of personal choice.

Regards

Sebastian

Hi all,

I just bought an excellent USB wireless card and wanted to share.

My laptop's internal wireless is quite flaky and I needed a quick fix
before heading out on a study visit to the US (where a wifi network
disagreeing with my laptop's internal adapter would be a major pain), so
decided to go down the USB adapter route, rather than installing a new
internal card.

I did some research and found that actually picking a USB adapter that
is well supported in the Linux kernel can be a pain, particularly as
manufacturers don't always divulge the chipset they have used.

Anyway, I bought a TP-Link TL-WN722N USB adapter:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002SZEOLG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has a AR9271 chipset and this is supported by the ath9k_htc driver.

It works "out of the box" with my Ubuntu 12.04 installation (kernel
version 3.11.0-15) and seems to have much better reception than my
internal adapter ever did!

During my research, I found the wireless.kernel.org website to be very
useful (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers).

Anyway, just thought I would share this in case anybody else is looking
for a good USB wireless adapter.

James

So if this is well supported under Linux why does TP-Link and Amazon not
mention the fact. How can this detract from sales?
At least add a comment to the Amazon site that it works well under Linux....
