Hello,
Just a quick email to introduce myself (hey!) and ask about PGP Key
signing. Rather than a long winded introduction you can find out more about
me on my website: www.james.greenhalgh.eu
My new years resolution was to have another serious attempt at routinely
using PGP. I'm trailing the browser plugin www.mailvelope.com with GnuPG
and it makes the experience of PGP much easier to use day-to-day. I was
wondering if the group is planning to do any awareness events to promote
the use of encryption for everyday communications? (including but not
limited to key signing parties - at the moment my key is self signed only
and I would like to rectify this!)
All the best,
James

Personally, I regard email crypto browser plugins as a last resort (because
I don't consider browsers to be terribly secure internally, which may put
your private keys at risk from attackers). Given that both Gmail and
Outlook.com provide IMAPS/SMTPS access to mailboxes, I'd suggest using a
native MUA with crypto facilities.
Best Regards,
Alex

Do you know about this page?
https://wiki.openrightsgroup.org/wiki/Cryptoparty
I've been dong some stuff with the older generation in Bath, with only
minor success.
Perhaps I'll see you at the next BBLUG.

Interesting page. I actually found the LUG on this related page:
https://wiki.openrightsgroup.org/wiki/Keysigning_parties. Unfortunately I'm
busy on the 22nd of this month but March is looking more promising! Does
anyone in the LUG regularly use or maintain PGP keys?

The plugin has received an external security audit and includes some nice
features to prevent leakage. In the unlikely event that my private key file
was compromised it is protected with a long passphrase and I have the
revocation certificate backed up offsite.

During my last forays into PGP (admittedly in 2006 & 2009) I trialled a
number of different desktop clients on Linux and OSX and didn't like any of
them. I use hosted GoogleApps for email and am a huge fan of the tabbed
mail sorting features that they introduced last year. No other service or
client has managed to replicate this functionality (I'm an old
fastmail.fmuser).
All the best,
James
