IME it's more likely to be the JVM than the version of Java.
The stable JVM for Java 6 was Sun (Now Oracle) Java 6.
Being an Oracle thing it's fairly much a giant PITA to install - they
threaten to sue anyone who hosts a packaged version of it, so you need
to go to the Oracle site, agree to licensing stuff, download it, and
then package your own version.
There are various packaging scripts around github for it which does
simplify the process.
