Dear BBLUG,

This might be only tenuously on-topic, so let me know if you feel it is on the wrong side of that line.

I run a small engineering consultancy based in Bristol. We design and analyse wind farms. Almost all of our servers and compute cluster are linux based. To date I have done the sysadmin and IT development self taught, however as we have grown this has become less and less tenable. I'd like to recruit someone to take over this role. My reason for emailing is that finding good people is difficult, and personal contacts and word of mouth seems the best way, so here I am.

I won't get into too much detail in this first email, but as a taster:

* 15 staff across (currently) 3 offices, with VPNs.

* Ubuntu-based servers, for SMB, internal apache/python based analysis functions etc.

* Nightly rsycing between offices.

* Remote office NAS boxes and online rsync facilities.

* Backups and daily snapshots again with rsync.

* A 30 Xeon core, ~300GB RAM compute cluster running Ubuntu, with PXE, LTSP, in a partial state of development completion. Used for running computational fluid dynamics codes (also open source).

* Masses of python programming we haven't had time for.

* Starting to play with VirtualBox for windows-based server side computing tasks.

* All users with windows laptops due to some specific software requirements.

* None of this is particularly fixed, just the way it is now.

So we're looking for someone with some experience in these sorts of fields, the willingness to get stuck into everything, learn new stuff, and someone who can help us expand the business smoothly to double or quadruple the size in the next 5+ years, without losing any data, and doing the best engineering we possibly can.

Some questions then:

* Who do I need to find to help with all of this, in terms of skills and experience?

* Is it worth me coming along to Knights Templar at some point to discuss in more detail?

* Do you know anyone who might be interested?

Coffee on me if you're around in Bristol centre any time.

Thanks for reading this far,

Mat.
