Hi
When I recently upgraded to Fedora 19 I got a new Firefox 24. On my
previous fedora I had no problems with this site:
http://www.logishotels.com/en/map-search.html
but now its not working because it needs the plugin.
As Adobe is not supplying the plugin any more what are my options (if
any) of getting Firefox24 to work?
I do not want to use Chrome unless I have to!
Thanks

Just tried in Mageia 3 on my netbook. I do get the map, but it doesn't
seem too be quite showing how it's meant too.

Try reinstalling the Flash plugin I guess. From the repo for Fedora for
that kind of thing or download it directly from Adobe and then install.
Might want to make sure the old Flash is removed first though, in case
of any potential issues.

Adobe still provide Flash for Linux as far as I know, it's just they
don't really support it any more except with security updates possibly
it seems, from what I remember, when I read about what you put before.
By 2017 they wanted to drop Flash for Linux completely if I remember
correctly, but it's all ok still at the moment since we are in 2013.
>

You can try the free software Gnash as an alternative or the open
source Swfdec. If your lucky they will work ok enough for you, but in
general Adobe Flash is still going to be better for obvious reasons. For
Gnash or Swfdec to work I think you would have to remove Adobe Flash
first by the way.

Sorted, I could not find the Linux version, have now downloaded the
older Shockwave version and it still works OK!

Hi Marc
We did not have a meeting on Thursday 24th, however we had one at the
LUG meeting. We now for a while have the final (concrete) venue, date,
and times. Yes the venue is booked! I'll put the information in a
seperate email, but please add it to the website as soon as possible.

Hi
The event is going too be called Linux Live 2014, (or maybe just Linux

Pervassie Media Studio at the Watershed in Bristol, between 10am to
4pm. These are the final confirmed details.
If you would like to help out on the day, please get back to us about

For some reason that's not the correct spelling and it's meant too be
/Pervasive Media Studio./

Hi,
I don't change OS's often and seem to have lost my LVM partition by
installing Mint14!
I installed the new OS (from live LXF DVD) to a spare 28GB partition and
kept my original fedora partition and did not notice anything on the
installer to stop creating a new boot partition!
I now have a dual boot (XP/Mint) box with a new grub2 menu that does not
include fedora!
Gparted GUI shows an error that it cannot read LVM partition.
It is still there but I need to know
How I can get some data from my LVM /home partition?
or
Is it possible to get my fedora to run again!?
Sorry about this but I rarely add OS's and normally use VM's but they
tend to be a bit slow.
The data is not critical but I would just like some bookmarks I found
recently.
Attached are some outputs which may be helpful, I can just do a new
Fedora install but thats cheating and I would like to know how to
resolve this in case I do it again!
Regards

Dunit!
FWIW:
Found it was lvm2 I needed for Mint not lvm!
I downloaded it and and squashfs-tools as suggested in another blog
(don't know if that was necessary as it was making partitions and
mounting them).
I have 3 logical volumes lv_newlap00, lv_newlap01 and lv_newlap02.
lv_newlap00 is a swap, 01 is "/" and 02 is "/home".
I made 2 directories lvm1 and 2 then mounted the root and home
partitions as ext 3 and up they popped on the mint desktop!
I will probably do a fresh install of FC19 but still not sure how I can
install a mint OS without overwriting my fc19 ext3 boot partition.
I will look carefully at the LXF DVD installer window before doing it
again!

Further to our discussions in the KT, by coincidence I checked my email
tonight and found an email from Morgan Computers
(www.morgancomputers.co.uk) saying that they've got some 4 GB USB 2.0
flash drives for ?3.39 inc VAT. That's the 5+ quantity price (down from
?3.99 for single items), so they might be willing to go even lower if
you offer to buy 30-50.
Having said that, there are even cheaper ones on eBay (as low as ?2.99)

Thanks for the info, we now believe we can get at least one of our
remixes on our 1GB sticks. You did better than me, I could only find
them for ?3.99 in my initial search!

Many thanks to all for the many helpful suggestions. They have given me
plenty to investigate.
I've printed them off for reference, and will work my way through them over
the coming days.

Hello Dave
You can add an option to the mount command to fix this issue
1. run Yast (from the "computer" tab of the start button menu)
2. enter root password when asked
3. select system from the left hand panel
4. select partitioner from the right hand panel
5. select yes when presented with the warning dialogue
You should now see a window called "expert partitioner"
This has two panes "system view" on the left and a context sensitive pane on
the right
6. select the top line in system view which should be the machine name
you should now have a right hand pane called "available storage"
This should have a list of devices and on the right hand side the fs (file
system) type and mount point
7. select your windows partition (which should have "FAT" in the
"fs type" field) with a single left click
8. now right click and select "edit" from the menu
Don't touch the left hand box labelled "formatting options" but check that the
"do not format partition" button is selected
Underneath "mount partition" on the right hand side is a button marked "fstab
options"
9. When clicked, this opens a window with an "arbitrary option
value" field at the bottom
on my system this reads
users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true
If I changed this to
users,uid=dave,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true
where dave is my login name, then all the files on the windows partition will
be writable by me instead of root
10. add the uid=<login name> option to the "arbitrary option value"
field, where <login name> is your user name on the system
11. check commas and make sure none of the other options are damaged
If in doubt hit "cancel" and start again
12. When happy, hit "OK" and then "finish" and then "Finish" again
You should then see a screen with a list of actions the Yast tool is about to
perform. Confirm if everything looks OK.
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave
I've seen a similar problem when doing a KDE version upgrade. If you right
click on the desktop, you should see a menu with the submenu "add panel". If
you select "default panel" from the submenu, it should give you a new taskbar
(in windows terms) with some useful widgets on it.
If this works, you can then right click on the start button on the damaged
panel, select "panel options" and then "delete this panel"
Selecting the "half moon" widget at the exterem right of a working panel
allows you to reposition and resize it as well as adding clocks, system trays
and other items of varying usefulness
Regards
Dave

Hi
Yes that's right another LUG meeting is coming up again, and it's this
Saturday, between well let's say 1pm and 5pm, although iit may finish
after 5pm depending on who is there. Please mention on this LUG mailing
list before coming too the meeting, if you are intending on attending,
and if you are new please send a basic introduction about yourself with
that :).
Timewise it really is people turning up when they want too and leaving
when they decide too. As a result for anyone new I would suggest
turning up at 1:30pm by the earliest, unless being all ok in waiting for
others too turn up. However by about 2pm usually most people who are
coming to the meeting are there.
We meet up at the Knights Templar pub in Temple Qsuay near Temple Meads
train station and Broadmead:
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-knights-templar
As usual I am hoping to meet new people at the LUG meeting as well :),
if you are such a person just come along and we sit at the back on the
lower level when entering the pub, in the left hand side corner with the
plugs, or near there instead.
We get a mixture of different ages from 20's onwards basically. We
really do welcome new people as well :), so no need to feel that you
haven't been on this mailing list long enough for example, if you are a
new person. However if you are such a person please introduce yourself
on the list first so that we have an idea who is turning up. I also
hope that other regular members will actually mention that they are
planning on coming on this mailing list before the meeting.
Drinks, chatting, food if wanted, people wiht hteir lap tops etc with
free pub wifi availale for those that would like it, and also someitmes
showing of Linux/tech related things, that have come along to the
meeting with them, that others may be interestd in seeing. On the
subject of that went to OGG Camp again recently in Liverpool, so got a
few things that I could show that may be of interest too someone.
It is indeed called a Linux User Group meeting, but that does not mean
we chat only about opensource/freesoftware and instead what gets chatted
about really depends on who is there.
I hope too also be meeting new people this Saturday :).
Regards
Sebastian

If your graphical environment is KDE you can press ALT +F2 and type into
the box 'kdesu konsole'. You should then get a password dialogue and
after entering your root password you should get a command window with
root privileges. Alternatively, if you type 'kdesu dolphin' in the
ALT+F2 box you will get the file manager with root privileges.

However I DO find I have a problem!
Whilst in Suse I can read any file on the windows partition, I cannot find
any way of getting permission to write it back after editing!
I can't find anyway of changing and signing in as root, to alter the
permissions, which are greyed-out and listed as for the "owner".
In earlier versionsof Suse, if I did anything that required a root access,
even temporary, a box opened to invite me to sign in as root, and that
lasted just until I completed the work I wanted to do.
But Suse 12.2 isn't bringing up a sign-in box, and I can't find anywhere in
the system for me to do this! The start button, bottom left, that brings up
different menus, does have one line "change user", but nothing happens....
The other "funny" - a black bottom border to the screen, behind which all
"minimised" windows vanish for ever, today ISN'T there, thankfully, but I
dread minimising anything, as it will again vanish into a black hole,
iretrievably. Not a good move! Yesterday I had to crash the Linux as I had
no means of closing programmes, as they had disappeared into the black
"bit". So I have to just shrink windows on the desktop, and keep them
clogging up the view. Why that black border appears, I don't know.
All suggestions will be gratefully receivec, as long they don't recommend
RTFM - humans are kinder at helping .....
Dave (Posset) thinking he was making progress, as he IS liking Suse on this
laptop, being infinitely faster (and fun) than XP on the same machine!

Hi
Haven't tried SuSE for a while but Alt-F1 should bring up a system menu for
your use.
To switch between open programs use Alt-Tab - this will bring programs back
to their pre-minimised state. Multiple Alt-Tab lets you switch between all
the currently opened windows.
If you don't have a way of shutting down the graphical front end you can
switch to another (text based) terminal an login there so that you can run
the shutdown command.
Hope that helps.

Hi
Have you tried to turn off compositing (desktop effects) with the key
combination - Alt+Shift+F12? As your black bottom border sounds like a
graphical issue.

Is is possible that the black bar at the bottom of the screen is just an
empty panel? What happens when you Right-Click on the bar? Does it give

app/widget/plasmoid/whatever-the-kids-call-it-these-days to the bar so
you can see your minimised programs.
Or try dragging the bar to a different edge of the screen so see if the
real panel is below it?

Do you have a digital camera? It would be helpful to see a picture of the desktop.
KDE allows to resize, add and remove taskbars.
Do you have multiple monitors connected?

Hi,
I have the above the above working scanner (works out of the box on
linux). If anyone wants it they can have it for a 2-4GB USB stick
donation (installfest).
I can bring it to the KT if convenient.

Hi,
I have suspected that even though I have the above configured for weekly
backups it douse not always work (even though I have set a cron job for
it) so I am trying to get it to send me an email as a check.
I have fc18 and fill in the relevant config "email" window for using
sendmail and when I test it, it gets timed out.
Should sendmail just work on fedora or should I use something else?
FYI this is the set up config:
http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/manual.html#email
(I am running the program as "root user")
Take it easy, this is not one of my strong points!

Hi Folks
We (the installfest team) would like the assistance of the lug.
On the poster (to advertise the event) we would like to put a number of
questions.
We think that the questions should be: "Thought provoking" and to
"Dissuade people that free = cheap".
Any suggestions would be greatly received. Please get your thinking caps
on and send your suggestions for questions to the mailing list or
directly to me.
p.s. the next (installfest) meeting is the 24/10; so ideally we would
like your questions by then.
Many thanks

Hi
I am going to Liverpool again this Friday, because of OGG Camp 13 :). I
expect/assume two people who used to come along too the LUG meeting's a
lot before, when I was as well, too be going as well, (and they know who
they are if they are reading this). However I wonder if anyone else who
reads this mailing list, in this period of time, is going, and if so who?
By the way OGG Camp tickets are still available I think, for those who
may want too come along to the event, and that have the time etc.
I am hoping too at least do a five minutes Lightning Talk at OGG Camp
this year about Mageia, that if it happens, should get videoed as well
:). Might do a longer more general one as well, depending on what
happens.a longer talk aswell/instead depending on what happens.
Regards
Sebastian

Hmm, OK, no clues there.
Try
ltrace -f iscan
which traces library calls, rather than system calls.

Hmm, OK, no clues there.
Try
ltrace -f iscan
which traces library calls, rather than system calls.

This is probably past the point of usefulness... But I'm on the bus - so I have a little time and it might be interesting to some, boring to others (apologies).
A shared library (elf based) has a shared object name which is used to resolve binary links (programs and other libraries), and ensure API compatibility. Some shared libraries also have versioned symbols.
You can use the command line utilities ldd, readelf -d or readelf -l (useful for debugging some linker issues), with a library or executable (library or program) to see how the linker plans to resolve links. In the event the device you're working with has limited utilities (e.g. you're cross compiling for ARM ) the linker itself is executable and can be used similarly to ldd by executing /lib/ld-linux....so --list (linker filename depends on architecture)
In the event you need detailed information on symbols resolution (useful on some occasions) you can set LD_DEBUG=help or libs, symbols, file... before the command you're running.

Forgot to mention the soname is not guaranteed to be the filename...

I actually mean readelf -A rather than readelf -l... Although that has it's uses too if your library is executable.

Tried to scan via Gimp plugin and it works OK and does not complain, I
assume that is because gimp is handling storage.
Simple Scan and Xsane both work and can store images OK.
As my laptop is not used much I upgraded to fc19 (fc20 out in November
Alex!).
Same problem exists, I assumed it was using the same iscan version and
that was the problem.
I then found did this omn my FC18 PC:
strace -f -efile iscan
and found this after disk space warning:
[pid 4134] access("/home/peter", W_OK|X_OK) = 0
[pid 4134] access("/home/peter/default.png", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
[pid 4134] open("/home/peter/default.png", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC,
0666) = 16
libpng warning: Application built with libpng-1.2.31 but running with 1.5.13
[pid 4134] --- SIGWINCH {si_signo=SIGWINCH, si_code=SI_KERNEL} ---
Just for my curiosity is there an easy way to get round this or should I
just report it and forget about iscan?
Is there any way to see if iscan is being work on!?
At least Linux has other programs I can use as long as Sane is working!
I bought the scanner to scan old slides but I will have to do that on
windoze I assume!.

Everything looks OK to me for this bit. The "No such file or directory"
is to be expected - the tool is probably just looking to see if the file
it's going to create already exists, so that it can warn you that it's
about to overwrite a pre-existing file.
Can you post a bit more? In particular, the stuff just *before* the
disk space warning. A few pages around the problem area should be enough.
