I?ve got a few 2U rack mount servers going cheap. No discs, all were used in a production environment before being replaced so should work just fine.

Reasonable specs ? Probably min 4Gb ram, 2-3GHz processor, some have hot swap drives, cd-roms etc. but sold as seen with no guaranteed spec (if they don?t work I?ll happily refund though :) )!

Only want ?75 each ? collect from Clevedon or I could possibly deliver.

Martin.

Realised I had an old Fedora 22 on a backup HD so tried that:

Tried an old A5 file on the fc22 - worked
Tried the file I had on fc23 - it worked but I noticed the printer
settings were still A4 Potrait!, however the size and orientation were
not "greyed out" and could be altered (I left them as set).

The page prints as if I had an A5 sheet, but I could have used an A4
and it would be printed in top left as portrait.

Other details:

Fedora 23 - Libre Office 5.0.5.2
Fedora 22 - Libre Office 4.4.7.2

So is this now likely to be Libre Office problem!?

When you say OO I hope your using LibreOffice 5.x latest also as OO is
pretty much dead imho.

Just checked and found Cups page says its still not 100% (unlikely to be
so as its getting ancient), as there were gutenprint driver which I
have used before, I installed Gutenprint 5.2.7-1 lsb3.2.

It ahs not changed the "greyed out" A4/Portrait, but it now prints OK.

A few months ago I re-installed fc23 and have not had to print A5 since
so, I assume Fedora used the default driver not gutenprint!?

Anyway that my theory that would fit circumstances.

Hi,

I need to print some A5 leaflets from an old leaflet odt file and cannot
do it any longer.

I set the page in OO to A5 and orientation to Portrait OK but when I got
to print and view printer properties it is set to A4 landscape and
"greyed out" so cannot change it.

I think this has happened somehow in an upgrade as it used to work!

I had this problem a long time ago but cannot remember what caused it,
I must admit to doing the windoze thing and re-installed the printer
(Epson R300), but it still will not print.

Any ideas on how to sort it out?

Thanks

Try print to PDF and see if you can change the page settings once that's
selected. Should tell you whether its the printer or OO which is
uncooperative.

Exported odf A5 page as pdf, closed OO writer then re-opened odf.

All OO format seems OK (A5 Portrait) but when I come to look at Printer
Settings/Printer Setup/Properties/Properties of Stylus-Photo-R300, I
get Paper Size A4 (greyed out), Orientation Portrait (greyed out) and
Paper tray Standard.

So can I assume its the driver (I have have already deleted and
re-installed the printer)?

Are you wanting to print on a piece of A5 paper, or print a A5 image on
A4 paper?

a4 is two peices of a5 next to each other.

i would create a new a4 document and copy/paste in two of the a5
documents then try to print.

i think your printer is refusing to accept a single a5 because it
only has a4 paper.

No, it can (could!) print A5 directly even if it had A4 sheets in the
feeder (the feeder width can be adjusted)

I've been using Amazon S3 for a few years. Soon exceeded the Free Quota
then it started costing about a pound a month, my card provider then
charged me a further pound to convert sterling to dollars. I backup just
documents, mail and a few config directories.

Last year Amazon sent me a survey to complete and for filling it in they
gave me a $25 voucher against S3 costs so I've not paid anything since
then. They sent me another survey a few weeks ago and another $25
voucher against S3 costs. Wonder if I'll get another survey next year?

I use the s3cmd scripts from http://s3tools.org/s3cmd and encrypt my
files before s3cmd sees them so I suppose I'm double encrypting.

I test retrieval now and again and that works fine. Never tested it for
bulk retrieval, probably never will as I have backups squirrelled away
at home and work. S3 is only there if my home and workplace burns down
at the same time, which is unlikely as they're 140 miles apart!

I use Google Drive for personal stuff. I get billed a couple pounds I
hardly notice.
but this is good to know, I like the Amazon platform.

For the brief period during which I played with this, I just installed a
SSH client, but I didn't/don't require X. I'm not sure how usable the
no-X version of emacs is, but perhaps alpine or mutt would be sufficient.

** RANT ALERT **

I created a few apps before deciding I didn't like Android's security
"model", if it can even be called that. I have since lobotomised my
phone, re-building Android from source after pruning so it is completely
sans google, and it is only used for voice and SMS. Too many services
randomly trying to phone home all the time for my liking in any case.

Infuriatingly Android does come with it's only version of iptables, but
you often find that the manufacturer has made it impossible to use if
you've the factory-installed OS still. Various suggestions for this
cross my mind, especially given the penchant for collecting stats on
everything we do. I find it very strange that no one is complaining
that manufacturers withhold root access on these computers. Any one
buying a desktop, laptop or server would be horrified to find that
they're not allowed to reinstall or have root on their own machines.
Why is no one protesting about phones? The number and complexity of the
hoops that must be jumped through to reinstall and to get root are
ridiculous, especially if you don't like the idea of just downloading
some unknown binary created by a stranger on a forum somewhere and
executing it on a device you use so heavily for so many sensitive tasks.

As for viruses on Android, I do see some interesting things, watching
network traffic. It seems that a bigger problem (at the moment) is
spyware. A LOT of android phones on the network I help to look after (a
large unversity), and a lot of them seem to be afflicted with
something. I find it very interesting to cross-reference the calls home
with geoip data. You probably won't notice if your phone or tablet is
reporting on you, or taking part in click-fraud or DDoS. For some of
the more badly written Android malware you might notice a drop in
battery life, but generally it has to be very badly written for you to
notice that if you're the sort of person who likes to leave wifi and/or
mobile data switched on.

Unfortunately my brief look at Android anti-virus suggested that none of
the free options (the only ones I liked at) were very good at picking
anything up or preventing infection. My own strategy is to keep minimal
data on the phone, back up anything new that I need to (eg new
contacts), and reinstall periodically.

For those who want some horror stories, I suggest you look at Samsung
GSM modem separation (or lack thereof -- the GSM modem can pass commands
to the OS, and you have no control or visibility of it) and Motorola
spyware, to name just two. Then there is the stuff that your connection
provider (eg Orange/EE) puts on the phone ..

By the way, has anyone worked out how to opt out of location tracking
yet? I have yet to find any practical information on it, and the
customer support monkeys don't seem to know anything about it.

I think termux is the more practical emacs - the android app builds
don't even work on any of my android devices. Termux has an emacs 25 in
its repos. Hacker's keyboard brings all the necessary keys to a soft
keyboard, I can emacs with this combo about as well as I ever have been
able to on a phone ( fine for irc, TODO.txt, notes, but not
going to be writing code or reading mail on it, but YMMV )

Take a look at tarsnap I've been using if for a while and have been
happy with it. It's not expensive, backups are encrypted, it seems to be
good at de-dupping which saves on storage. Not sure if the web interface
will fit your criterion but perhaps worth a look.

And what?s a good, sensibly priced, secure option for storage that integrates with the backup s/w?

$10/month for 50GB of storage is not pricey! Once possible issue with s3
storage is that it may be harder to work out the cost in advance (but if
you find good storage that is significantly cheaper than rsync.net then do
let us all know).

I?d be looking at considerably more than that though - which becomes more than paying for hosting my own server.
S3 certainly looks like a good storage choice though.

I am fairly sure there is an emacs for Android, (yes, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zielm.emacs <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zielm.emacs>) but it seems hard to enter control characters without a proper keyboard, which makes using it non-trivial, since my left little finger sits on ctrl when using Emacs!

I currently use BackupPC to back up my servers to a single dedicated server. It works fine, but if I move the backups into the cloud I can save money and have less to maintain.

So, what has similar functionality to BackupPC (good web interface for status, restore etc.; pooling to save space; open source/free).

And what?s a good, sensibly priced, secure option for storage that integrates with the backup s/w?

Cheers,

Martin.

There are some really good amazon s3 clients which are free.
Personally i've been wanting to try rsync.net. you can use either standard
rsync or combine it with zfs for an amazingly quick backup. bit more
expensive but no usage fees.

Hi Steve

Oh thought that was reply to my email's contents, but nope.

Yeah I remember you sort of to some extent, it's been over two years.

The next LUG Meeting is actually coming up quite soon, Saturday next
week. I really intend to be at that one myself as well, since I haven't
been since I think it was October and really feels like that now as
well. Turn up at about 2pm and someone will probably be already there
at The Knights Templar Pub and we sit on the lower level at the back
usually, with people leaving about 5:30pm usually.

There's a parcel that's waiting to be picked up, but I have a feeling it
could be something quite interesting that I crowd funded last year, so
if I got that before the meeting I am bringing that along with me.

I wonder who else will be at the LUG meeting as well?

Regards

Sebastian

I see that Clam AV is not available for Android. Anyone know of any
freedom-respecting AV software for Android?

Its kind of hard to get a virus on android so it not much as a problem as
the AV companys are making out, just use fdroid for utilities and get the
main stream apps only from gplay

Thanks Ioan. That's what I thought. Somebody less savvy asked me to
check, after showing me what looked to me like sub-ethical AV software
bundled by Asus on their Android tablets. You know the kind of thing:
hey look, there's a big but unspecified exploit, suggested fix being to
buy their full featured product. I gave it short shrift but I thought
I'd check for a reputable product I could recommend anyway, since
experience tells me that some people won't be satisfied by "don't
bother". It's going to be coming up regularly as I'm volunteering
teaching an introductory Android tablet course for seniors over the next
few weeks.

Hi

Did anyone order a Ubuntu Tablet other than me here? Some people are
starting to receive them now (
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/04/bq-m10-ubuntu-tablet-shipping-now )
but I didn't pre order one early, so maybe got another week or two to
wait yet. I read this a bit earlier this morning and I thought it was
worth a share here:
http://freedompenguin.com/the-linux-crowd/ubuntu-tablet-im-grabbing-one/

Looks like the pre order offer is still available for now where a case
and screen protector will be included as well:
https://store.bq.com/gl/ubuntu-edition

For any of you who do not know, the main reason most people who have
bought the tablet are wanting the tablet is since the convergence
feature, that will adjust the interface depending on what's connected to
it, keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but also by default allow desktop
programs to work on it such as Firefox, Libre Office, The Gimp, and
Gedit. However the defaults are going to be a bit boring of course for
such programs and so lots of people will be apt-get ing lots of other
programs it seems once it's set up to do that. Got to put the tablet in
read write mode currently, which also stops it receiving over the air
updates.

There's also a x86 Ubuntu tablet trying to get crowd funded it seems,
but I don't have interest in buying that:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ubuntu-windows-tablet-mj-technology,31330.html
I seriously have more interest in possibly buying this though:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-intel-z8550-win-10-os-game-console#/story
Even though going by the Indiegogo comments how well it works with a
Linux distro or not is questionable. However Windows 10 for a Windows
version is sort of ok (okish) really so woudn't?t be to bad for a small
using at times gaming/PC device.

When I saw the crowd funding campaign for the GPD Win it reminded me of
the Linux based Open Pandora (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_%28console%29
https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pandora/ ) which I was
considering maybe buying a few years back, but never did. That's
currently out of stock it seems whilst a device update is being waited
for it seems. Interestingly though I noticed that the GPD XD with less
storage space than what's currently being offered on Indiegogo as a
limited 128GB edition (
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-xd-limited-edition-with-memory-of-128gb#/
) is available in the Open Pandora shop.

Like with the GPD Win I am thinking of maybe buying the GPD XD with the
128GB storage, even though I am not a gamer. However I do prefer
classic styled games, or retro gaming even as I believe it's called
these days. The GPD XD is a maybe, to go with a possible GPD Win.
Actually would the GPD Win be worth it, or mostly a waste of money
really? Same for the GPD XD? it was more of a if I buy the GPD Win I may
as well buy the GPD XD with lots of storage space as well, I guess.
What's a bit annoying though is that any tech such as what's been
mentioned in this email (with the exception of the below Nexdock) is
always going to be around the ?200 pounds mark, as in about ?200
pounds. Also yes the two GPD devices I have mentioned are crowd funded
so there could be issues receiving or trying to recieve them, but GPD
have actually sold devices before, such as the GPD XD with less storage
space.

I am really looking forward to receiving my Nexdock (
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nexdock-the-world-s-most-affordable-laptop--2#/
) which is nearly on it's last day of funding and then won't be
available to buy any more at all, that version. I emailed here about it
before with no response, but yes it can have various Linux devices
connected to it. I am going to be connecting Raspberry Pi's to it it
seems, but also my Remix Mini's, and it seems Ubuntu Phones as well,
etc. It may look like a thing for Windows 10 or mostly going by a quick
look at the campaign, but look at the campaign closely it is a general
purpose device, for Linux, Android, etc as well :), and even giving a
lap top another monitor like if it was connected to a TV.

Best Regards

Sebastian

Did anyone order a Ubuntu Tablet other than me here?? Some people are
starting to receive them now (
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/04/bq-m10-ubuntu-tablet-shipping-now )
but I didn't pre order one early, so maybe got another week or two to
wait yet.? I read this a bit earlier this morning and I thought it was
worth a share here:
http://freedompenguin.com/the-linux-crowd/ubuntu-tablet-im-grabbing-one/

Looks like the pre order offer is still available for now where a case
and screen protector will be included as well:
https://store.bq.com/gl/ubuntu-edition

For any of you who do not know, the main reason most people who have
bought the tablet are wanting the tablet is since the convergence
feature, that will adjust the interface depending on what's connected to
it, keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but also by default allow desktop
programs to work on it such as Firefox, Libre Office, The Gimp, and
Gedit. However the defaults are going to be a bit boring of course for
such programs and so lots of people will be apt-get ing lots of other
programs it seems once it's set up to do that.? Got to put the tablet in
read write mode currently, which also stops it receiving over the air
updates.

There's also a x86 Ubuntu tablet trying to get crowd funded it seems,
but I don't have interest in buying that:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ubuntu-windows-tablet-mj-technology,31330.html
I seriously have more interest in possibly buying this though:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-intel-z8550-win-10-os-game-console#/story
Even though going by the Indiegogo comments how well it works with a
Linux distro or not is questionable. However Windows 10 for a Windows
version is sort of ok (okish) really so woudn't?t be to bad for a small
using at times gaming/PC device.

When I saw the crowd funding campaign for the GPD Win? it reminded me of
the Linux based Open Pandora (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_%28console%29
https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pandora/ ) which I was
considering maybe buying a few years back, but never did. That's
currently out of stock it seems whilst a device update is being waited
for it seems.

However? I do prefer
classic styled games, or retro gaming even as I believe it's called
these days. The GPD XD is a maybe, to go with a possible GPD Win.
Actually would the GPD Win be worth it, or mostly a waste of money
really? Same for the GPD XD? it was more of a if I buy the GPD Win I may
as well buy the GPD XD with lots of storage space as well, I guess.?
What's a bit annoying though is that any tech such as what's been
mentioned in this email (with the exception of the below Nexdock) is
always going to be around the ?200 pounds mark, as in about ?200
pounds.? Also yes the two GPD devices I have mentioned are crowd funded
so there could be issues receiving or trying to recieve them, but GPD
have actually sold devices before, such as the GPD XD with less storage
space.

I am really looking forward to receiving my Nexdock (
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nexdock-the-world-s-most-affordable-laptop--2#/
) which is nearly on it's last day of funding and then won't be
available to buy any more at all, that version. I emailed here about it
before with no response, but yes it can have various Linux devices
connected to it.? I am going to be connecting Raspberry Pi's to it it
seems, but also my Remix Mini's, and it seems Ubuntu Phones as well,
etc.? It may look like a thing for Windows 10 or mostly going by a quick
look at the campaign, but look at the campaign closely it is a general
purpose device, for Linux, Android, etc as well :), and even giving a
lap top another monitor like if it was connected to a TV.

Best Regards

Sebastian
