A bit subjective. I happen to think the way people are *unwittingly*
co-opted into this is one of the bigger ones.
Android dependency on Play store could be viewed as a sneaky way of
getting people to link their real identity to Google analytic markers,
in a way that is less optional than traditional browser tools.

Hi,
Like Lorenzo, I do not have the space to set up all my audio outboard.
But I can get quite a lot done with just the mixer and the Edirol UA-25.
The computers off course run Linux. I have not used any RT patches since
2.6.8 or thereabouts, am currently on 3.14. The major issues with audio are
usually due to issues in the graphics drivers and X windows.
Recording a single stereo track with jackd takes about 5% of my dual core
Intel Atom @ 1.6GHz.
Cheers,
Martin

Does anyone want a collection of 13 5.25" floppy disks, unused? I hate
sending usable stuff to landfill.
Any while typing, I also have two Compact Flash cards, one 128Mb and
the other 8Mb; were in a camera no longer working.
Oh well, probably landfill

Hi John,
I'd take the CF cards. I do a lot of retro computing and they make useful
floppy replacements. However, whilst I'm no longer in Bristol, I'd
happily pay postage.

Greetings all
I have stumbled into the new millennium at last, buying myself a
smartphone. I have accepted various things in setup, some with
misgivings. Now I find that a search done on firefox on my debian box is
showing up in google on the smartphone. I don't quite see how this is
happening and I am concerned about the security of my desktop.

If you have logged into your Google account from your smartphone (in particular, to access Google Play (the app store)), then Google will have been able to realise that the two browsers are "owned" by the same person, and therefore they will customise the search results accordingly.

Try opening Chrome Settings on your phone and going to Basic - your address
- Services - Sync and file with those. Also, see if Chrome to Mobile does
anything useful.

If you're logged into Google (e.g. for gmail, Play store) in Firefox when
you perform your search (possibly even if you're logged out, but still have
Google cookies in Firefox - I haven't tested exhaustively), then your search
will be associated with that Google account, which presumably is the same
account you've configured as your Android account.
There are far bigger things to worry about...

I think the support page said that there was only partial linux support for
video, so maybe that's where the linux restrictions lie.

If "Bath University" == "University of Bath" then you might be thinking
of CSound which is very much thriving.
If "Bath University" == "Bath (Spa) University" then possibly, I
couldn't comment.

I think of myself as a serious amateur in computer music, writing open
source music software, composer and occasional performer. My studio
is totally Linux (OpenSuSE13.1) but I support users on many
platforms. As I was once paid for a piece in a concert on Koln I
might count as semi-pro(?)
Not sure I have much to add though; I do not do plugins or jack or
ardour as they do not seem necessary to my sounds. Also I am Bath
based.

It seems someone on this list might be quite familiar with both Csound and
Rosegarden:

"Around 1991, John ffitch ported Csound to Microsoft DOS"
http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/resources/authors/
"...under the tutelage of John ffitch, of Csound fame."

Rosegarden was originally a final year project at University of Bath
School of Mathematical Sciences, written by Chris Cannam and Andy
Green, supervised by John ffitch. Chris has since re-written it all
with others. He is now at Queen Mary University of London, CS
department as an audio researcher -- check his system, they rock.
I still use (sometimes) the original Rosegarden to go from traditional
notation to Csound.

Ugh, a mix of top and bottom posting. Kinda difficult to follow!
I do a lot of music albeit not on Linux. I was interested to see Bitwig
released but disappointed that it's a Ableton clone. The most promising
DAW on Linux in a traditional sense is probably Rosegarden - previously
(still?) developed by some guys at Bath University. I'm unsure of the
state of this though.
Whilst I've not yet found it practical to move music composition to Linux,

I'd be interested in any discussions and success stories - as music has
been the only thing for years preventing me from totally ditching Windows.
No, OSX is not the answer either.

Whilst I've not yet found it practical to move music composition to Linux,
everything else (3D modelling, video rendering and editing) *is* all done
under Linux.
I'd be interested in any discussions and success stories - as music has
been the only thing for years preventing me from totally ditching Windows.

BTW opening the ports got Chromcast to be detected and I can see various
pages/videos, however it does not seem to play Iplayer videos. The TV
just says its "loading" and I did give it a bit of time.
As err indoors wanted it ASAP, I got XBMC on my pi to do it!

Hello Lorenzo,
I used to do a lot of fiddling with Linux audio and was involved in setting
up some of the linux audio workstations at the trinity centre
as well as live streaming from various gigs in bristol using a totally
linux system.
Linux audio has come a long way since then , a lot more of the pro audio
cards have linux drivers and a lot of there fancier features
are available. Also bitwig has brought a professional DAW to linux finally
, i've been very impressed with it. Before then it was a bit
of a battle getting a coherent and effective composition environment
together with the likes of hydrogen , ardour and rosegarden.
I've pretty much given up audio stuff myself because i now have a family
and one of my ears doesn't work properly anymore but
there are others lurking who are still using it and i'm sure if you talk
about what you are doing they will emerge from the shadows.
There are various funding sources available for projects like this that i
might be able to connect you to if you can describe more about
what you want to do.
Cheers
Amias

Cheers
Amias

Hi,
After the meeting I decided to but a Chromecast for ?18 mainly to view
webpages on my TV via Chrome.
I have a Moto G phone but it seems the H/W will not allow it to work.
I tried windoze xp chrome browser and it works, but using the browser
in Fedpra 18 it has the cast icon but Chromecast is not detected.
Any experts out there who have got it working using Linux, if so how!?
PS I am not wanting to mirror!
Regards

Android Chrome by default doesn't support casting web pages, but you could try this experimental feature: http://m.techradar.com/news/software/applications/chromecast-can-beam-videos-from-an-android-chrome-browser-to-a-big-tv-1231007

Oooops! I was not detailed enough.
I did install Chrome Beta and enabled the Chromecast in the "Flags" on
my Moto G, but that did not work either which I assume was because of
H/W WiFi limitations as mentioned at the KT yesterday.
I had assumed that Chromecast would work on my Linux box with the Chrome
browser that's what I am attempting atm.

(Quite) a few years ago, one of the community centres in Bristol (the
one in an old church -- it's name escapes me) did a number of audio
things (IIRC they had their own studio) and a number of Linux things. I
think they also did Linux audio things. That and Bristol Wireless might

Hi,
Its somewhat semi pro ( I spose ), I helped out a friend put a nice Linux
rig together to control microphones and other stuff to back up his guitar
... It was based on Ubuntu.
The hardware iirc, was like a dual core dell system with a specialized
sound card. I had patched up a custom kernel with the RT patches see:
https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page
Using Jack Audio and pretty much from what I recollect here:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb03/articles/linuxaudio.asp
The quality of his recordings was pretty cool actually, especially since he
moved to a house in West Virginia with a sealed basement.

Hi,
After the meeting I decided to but a Chromecast for ?18 mainly to view
webpages on my TV via Chrome.

Sounds like a great idea -- go for it!

That and Bristol Wireless might
be worth talking to.

For those interested!
It seems I will have to check my ports/firewall!:

Will have another go tomorrow.

Hi,
Its somewhat semi pro ( I spose ), I helped out a friend put a nice Linux
rig together to control microphones and other stuff to back up his guitar

Katie and I are here. I've got a blue Kubuntu t-shirt on and we have Linux
Voice featuring Bristol LUG with us.
We are in the UPPER area, where we normally meet, straight in front of the
door.

Hi all,
my name's Lorenzo, I'm a 27 Italian sound engineer moved in Bristol at the
beginning of May.
I'm using linux (several distro, but mainly ubuntu) for common use from
years, and I keep using it for my audio projects.
I run a linux based home studio in Italy, and I'm willing to continue my
project here in Bristol, in a not so far future! Now I have no space to put
my recording stuff, so I brought from Italy just a couple of mics, a couple
of soundcards and the studio PC (now running UbuntuStudio 13.10).
I was wondering if is there someone using Linux to pro/semi-pro audio
purpose in your group. I would be really happy to know more about it and to
share my experience.
Thank you in advance, hope to get a reply, even if negative!
Cheers!
Lorenzo
Ps. I just casually noticed that today (!!) was the day of your monthly
meeting and that it must have finished.. right now! So sorry about that, I
could have come and joined you and personally introduced myself. BTW, I'm
planning to stay here at least for other 3 months, there will be time for
that!

Katie and I are here. I've got a blue Kubuntu t-shirt on and we have Linux
Voice featuring Bristol LUG with us.
We are in the UPPER area, where we normally meet, straight in front of the
door.

Subject: [bristol] Hi all! linux audio in Bristol?

Hi all,
my name's Lorenzo, I'm a 27 Italian sound engineer moved in Bristol at the
beginning of May.
BTW, I'm
planning to stay here at least for other 3 months, there will be time for
that!
