Hi,
Several times over the last 4 years I have offered to help a local club
maintain their site, but they have never took up my offer, they just get
local members to produce a site, who leave until another "volunteer"
arrives and the site is not updated.
A usual scenario it seems!
It now seems they have a "focal point" and want to talk, and I am a bit
short of some basic knowledge! I have Wordpress (WP) on a laptop to
show how to administer it but I do not know how to move/recreate a site.
Their present site is run by Wix (I don't know if they pay for it), and
their Domain name is owned by a previous member:

Hi -
At the very least, the present domain administrator (/owner) will need to amend the Address (A) record for 'www' to point to the IP address of the new WordPress host (once you have one!). That WordPress site will need to be up and ready (perhaps only serving existing content reworked for WordPress under a temporary domain name).
If they wish to relinquish the domain entirely, they'll need to action that via 123 Reg. If they're not around to do that, you'll need to wait until the domain expires next April (assuming they haven't set up auto-renewal) and buy it before anyone else does!
