Are there any Apple collectors on the lists? I have two beige Apple Mac
systems and an Apple CRT monitor to go with them. You're welcome
to add them to your collection if you'd like them. As follows:

Power Macintosh G3, M3979, 266MHz, 32MB RAM (missing) 4GB HD.
In desktop case that fold open rather neatly for access to the
motherboard.

Spare PSU for above, believed faulty, 614-0039, DPS-150GB.

Power Macintosh G3, M4405, 300MHz, 64MB RAM, 8GB HD + extra HD (not
properly fixed into case). I ran Linux on this one for a while. In
a mini-tower case with fold-down side panel for access.

Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display, M2494, 17-inch, Apple 15-pin
D-connector for video (fits above PowerPC Macs). Has an Apple Desktop
Bus connector on the back of the swivel stand, a headphone socket on
the front and what must be audio connectors on the back.

I can deliver in the Bristol area if required.

Hi,

My first foray into the Smartfone World has met with a bit of a problem
with screen locking and other faults with a suspect intermittent screen.
I am now waiting for a replacement MotoG (from Tesco).

During my conversation with a reasonable "Techy" he informed me that if
I had my finger on the edge of the screen while its booting, the screen
calibration is corrupted and the "Android Buttons" will/may not work!

Is this correct, if so, I think its a pretty poor design?
If it has to calibrate at boot then there should be some sort of warning
to keep your digit off its face!

Regards

Sounds plausible. Capacitative touchscreens work by measuring changes in capacitance from the background "default" caused by the presence of your finger, so when it boots it needs to work out what the "background default" is, and if you have your finger already on the screen, it will be confused what the "default" is. Different devices might work in different ways, though - some of them might re-calibrate in use, which would resolve that problem. I guess it depends on how it is designed.

I don't think it's a common problem, though, so it might only be an issue in certain situations (a bit like the "grip of death" issue on mobile phones with antennae built into the case).

David says nearly everything I was planning on saying.

The main thing I'd add would be that I'd expect a power cycle to reset the
calibration if it doesn't automatically re-calibrate whilst in use.

I'd also add that I've not seem anything unusual on either my month-old
SIM-free Moto G or my partner's 6 month old Tesco-branded Moto G.

Best Regards,
Alex
