Hi,

I have had a recent problem with Windows 7 and Fedora 14 dual boot and
windows will now not boot. I only keep a copy of windows so that I can
download Garmin maps and update my Harmony R/C.

When I tried to use a virtual machine for these a few years ago I could
not get them to work.

Is anyone using these programs successfully now, if so, are there any
"getchas" to get them to work!?

Regards

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that gpg is trying to access something
like /dev/urandom to generate the private key and that this device isn't being
correctly created in the chroot environment.

Could be completely wrong though :-)

Yes, virtualization works. I've been using various virtualization solutions
since 1997 (the original VMware workstation beta, on my 8MB 486). Use of
virtualization is also the norm in modern corporate IT environments.

For your specific use-case, I'd anticipate at least two problems: firstly,
you'll probably need a new Windows 7 license as your previous license will
be activated against the (physical) hardware that it's currently running on
(unless it's a retail copy of Windows 7); secondly, you're a braver man than
I for attempting to update the firmware images/configuration of devices from
within a VM. You'll need to pass through the USB from the host OS to the
Windows 7 guest OS (this feature probably isn't available in all
virtualization solutions), and hope that the host OS nor the virtualization
layer interferes with communications from the guest OS. In theory, they
shouldn't, but minor differences in behaviour may result in corrupt
configurations/firmware being installed on your Garmin or Harmony, from
which it may be difficult or impossible to recover.

Best Regards,
Alex

I may also suggest looking at the Open Street Map To garmin tools to get
maps without the garmin software as IIRC you can put maps on using a sd
card if it has a sd card slot
