I realise this is a long shot but I am desperate!
My Toshibba lapto has gone funny. It is running OpenSuSE 13.2
Yesterday apparently unprovoked eery time I type a space it returms /; nd
hen the space. As you might guess it makes it had to do anything,
especially as I am emacs+xterm use in the main.
I have tried rebooting of course to no avail, and tried various Fn+key
combinations. I am assuming it needs sme had no idea how. Also tred
recovery boot.....
I can ssh into it but that s no way to work from an nient undepowered
laptop. Any suggesions ther than buying a new computr which I have
thought of already

try boot off your original dvd in rescue mode and see if its still happening
since the original install worked it should rule out a software issue. (i
dont know if you tried recovery via grub or if you booted off the disk)

It looks like you've got other keyboard problems! Or is that just sloppy
typing? :-)
One thing to try is if there's somewhere in the BIOS that lets you type
a space see if it happens in there as well. If it does then it's
probably a hardware problem. If there's nothing in the BIOS that lets
you type them try in a GRUB boot screen which has a really simple
keyboard driver.
Also, try plugging in an external USB keyboard and see if that's affected.
If it's only happening in Linux then you might have inadvertently put in
some sort of funky keyboard map. Try 'setxkbmap gb' and see if that does
anything.
Shane.

If it's a hardware problem and the keyboard has failed, then it's often a fairly cheap (£20-30), quick and easy job to replace the keyboard (after all, they need to supply them with different layouts for different locales). Google around for the service manual, find the part number, order from eBay, Amazon, Xenon, etc.
Best Regards,
Alex
