Hi,

I have two identical HD's with different configurations versions of
Fedora, both are using a common "home" directory but both have separate
"boot" partitions using grub2.

I know it is not a good setup but was keeping one HD as a main working
Dick and the other to play with!

As I sometimes boot from a different disk and am not sure which one,
because there are two identical headings in the BIOS entries, I wanted
to have two different coloured grub menus.

I thought I had two separate "Grubs" is this true?

I have both HD's with ext4 boot partitions with the flags set BUT when I
alter one (change text colour) it alters the other!

I have tested this by setting the BIOS for only one HD and setting the
other devices to "none" and also telling it not to search for other
bootable devices.

I did use a GUI which was a bit flaky (Grub Customizer) but also did
changes manually which affected both HD's.

I have done re-installs and "grub2-mkconfig" which all works OK and
detects everything on the box and puts it in the menu.

I always thought when grub was updated it only updates the one on the HD
you are using, or does "update" look at the whole box and updates all!?

It would just be nice to understand what is going on and why I cannot
get 2 grub menus on 2 HD's.

Regards

Grub will be loaded from the disk you boot from, although it may
subsequently boot the OS installed on another disk.

If you want to know which system you're running, you could do something
like change the prompt (typically defined in /etc/profile or similar).

Allegedly, you're allowed to play (or allow someone else to play) with a
working Dick...

Oops!
So is it possible that grub updated both grubs at the same time or is that not possible!?
Will look at this later today just to make sure I am in fact booting from separate DISKS!

Well, it is definitely possible... if you request it explicitely... or if
you are not careful enough....

You tell Grub where to find its configuration files during its installation
(grub-install --boot-directory ...). That boot directory defaults to /boot.
So if you installed both Grubs from the same OS without mounting the
correct boot partitions or without overriding the defaults, your two Grubs
are loading the same configuration.

That's one reason why you shouldn't use multiple Grubs.

I wasn't, but I did see references to "install --boot-directory.

Just looked back on the terminal and what I actually did was:

booted from sda and did grub-install /dev/sda (then mkconfig)
booted from sdb into the same OS and did grub-install /dev/sdb (then
mkconfig).

It did not complain and probed the OS's OK.

That would have been the case.

So if you installed both Grubs from the same OS

Yep

Yep I fully accept that, all I wanted was to see which HD I was using,
but that is not really important.

My reasoning behind this requirement is that when I install a new OS, I
like to disconnect my "main" HD then upgrade the other. If I only have
one grub on that HD the other will not boot to upgrade. I now realize
this is not a good way to work and will only use one grub in future.

Thanks for the info, it is not so confusing now!
