I wonder if in main land eruope the tv's don't have different hrz because
its cheaper for tv sold in England to have the us standard on it as well
PAL so they don't have 2 different devices with the same language on.

When you send an email to a list (or anywhere, really), you have a choice.
You can either take sufficient time and care over the composition of the
email so that readers can understand it easily, or you can write it
quickly and expect each and every reader to invest the exra time necessary
to understand your point.
I think, in this case, you've made the wrong choice.

1: does anyone know how to contact the administrators of the Debian
forums? It says my account is deactivated and to contact an
administrator, but cannot find out how!
2: I want to ask Debian about pppoe; I recently installed FTTC using
the supplied modem and straight into a Debian box. It works OK
except when the link hiccups it restarts two ppp networks, and that
messes up the firewall rules (written for ppp0, and ppp1 is blocked).
The question is where does this second ppp come from? And how do I
remove it? ~I suspect /etc/network/interfaces but the documentation is
far from clear. Actually there are minor issues like no logging.

Hi
Just so that people know: No yesterday wasn't our last LUG meeting
before Christmas. Our next one will be, (the 3rd Saturday of the month
instead of the usual 4th Saturday,) on the 20th December.
Yesterday at the LUG meeting like whenever it did last year the
suggested idea of eating/ordering Christmas Dinner dinner for a specific
time came up for the December meeting. However if I remember correctly
Christmas Dinner didn't happen last year, because we hadn't booked in
advanced.
This year the suggested time for being there to hopefully eat Christmas
Dinner as a group at is currently 2pm, with people turning up a bit
earlier to order if not already pre ordered. However to make sure that,
it will happen, I think that we should possibly book it in advanced.
Although those of us who came yesterday could have probably had it then
it turns out.
What I am wondering is who would like to eat Christmas Dinner as a group
on the 20th December at our usual Knights Templar pub, other than Peter,
myself, and I think Chris H as well? The menu seems reasonable and even
for the vegetarian option :), and I mean the food itself, but also the
price. I can also provide more details going by a menu I was given
yesterday.
Best Regards
Sebastian

SYSTEM SETTINGS->DESKTOP EFFECTS - adjust
& APPLICATION APPEARANCE & WORKSPACE APPEARANCE
You can get KDE to look like gnome or windows if you want
Do you have any app specific window settings on those that do not move?right
click window title and look for app/window settings.
If not then maybe those are not windows but are desktop widgets? Hover the
mouse over them and Look for the spanner and window adjust icons

I will bring my net-book running KDE4 with me to the KT. I like KDE as
you can configure almost anything in it. The problem can be, tunnelling
through a large amount of options to get what you want. Also the
grouping is not necessarily too intuitive!

A few answers to this thread:
PC Monitor settings 1680 x 1050 (DGM Monitor)
KDE4 was not installed earlier (I think!)
Moving Window - Thunderbird window will not move. When right clicking
top menu I get "Menu Bar" "Mail Toolbar" and "Customize" which is only
for toolbars.
Tried Settings > Desktop Effects > All Effects > Highlight Window, this
was only for hovering cursor.
So I still cannot seem to find how to stop it.
FWIW I did install KDE from a fedora howto which was not straight
forward, maybe this is the problem!
If I have the time I will install it on my laptop to see if it does the
same thing and bring it to the KT for enlightenment!

I'm not sure what you mean by the selected window being "very bright and
glaring"? Does the border around with window brighten or the whole
thing? It could be your window theme. Open "System Settings -> Workspace
Appearance" and try choosing different "Window Decorations" and "Desktop
Theme" to see if that helps.
As for the window moving, it's possible (but unlikely) that you've
locked the positions of the windows or turned off their borders. If you
right click on the window's top border (not the Thunderbird menu but the
header of the window where it says something like "Mozilla Thunderbird")
you should get a menu with things like "Move to Desktop" and "Move to
Screen". Choose "More Actions -> Special Window Settings" and in the
"Size & Position" tab make sure "Position" is unchecked. If you don't
have a border around the window you can use ALT-F3 to get access to the
menu and ensure the "No border" option isn't turned on.
The keyboard shortcut for moving a window is to hold the ALT key then
left-click anywhere in the window and drag to move it.
Hope this helps!
Shane.

the border
It could be your window theme. Open "System Settings -> Workspace
> Appearance" and try choosing different "Window Decorations"
That was it, I had "Oxygen" and it has a bright surround on my PC with
the blue fedora wallpaper. It was quite bright but OK now I am using
"plastik".
I have instaled it on my Thinkpad and wit the same wallpaper, looks
quite normal. I do have the monitor (PC) set to quite a natural white
temperature though.
and "Desktop"KDE Plasma Workspaces"

Not lacked

Looks like that was it!! too many years using just Gnome!

Yep, that seems it for now.
FWIW I did some of the tweaks in this video:

Hi
Today is the afternoon of our next informal LUG pub meeting, and I
haven't been to the LUG meeting since August I think it was. I should
be at the Knight's Templar pub for about 2/3pm.
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-knights-templar
If there is someone new who gets this in time, that is able to come
along this afternoon, well I hope that you do and here are some more
details: I would suggest not turning up until 1:30pm by the earliest
when at least someone else is likely to be there as well. When entering
the pub we sit on the lower level at the back of the pub in the left
hand hand side corner by the plugs, or near there instead if someone
else is already there.
I hope to meet quite a few people there this afternoon.
Regards
Sebastian

SYSTEM SETTINGS->DESKTOP EFFECTS - adjust

And no I don't think you can. KDE is more of a organisation/project and
plasma is the desktop environment

Sorry but this KDE has no "Gamma" in Display and Monitor and I cannot
see anything relevant in Energy Saving.
What is more of a concern is I cannot drag all active windows on Desktop
holding left mouse button, some do work but others don't!

Sorry but this KDE has no "Gamma" in Display and Monitor and I cannot
see anything relevant in Energy Saving.
What is more of a concern is I cannot drag all active windows on Desktop
holding left mouse button, some do work but others don't!

Hi,
I have (eventually) decided to try KDE (from Gnome) on my fc20.
Switched over OK but cannot seem to find the display setting to stop the
selected window becoming very bright and glaring.
I am sure its there but I cannot seem to find it atm!
Could a kde user save me a bit of time please!?
Thanks

I think I may be interested in that since who the book is by etc, yes
the creator of MINIX.
>> - Wrox (pub): Beginning PHP4
A book about PHP could be useful, since I have been meaning to possibly
learn it at some stage, but also Javascript, so both books might be useful.
>> - Wrox: Javascript Reference

I don't think many people from our LUG etc will be using DOS now, and I
don't, but from a computer history perspective a DOS book could be of
some interest at least I think.

The two Apple product books could be of interest to people I know, but
personally I don't use such Apple products.

Yes that would be good I think if you could come along to the LUG
meeting this Saturday with the books, and I intend to be there, at about
2pm to 3pm.

Hi,
I have (eventually) decided to try KDE (from Gnome) on my fc20.
Switched over OK but cannot seem to find the display setting to stop the
selected window becoming very bright and glaring.
I am sure its there but I cannot seem to find it atm!
Could a kde user save me a bit of time please!?
Thanks

Sorry for my quick reply!
Seems its "Plasma" desktop! Can I have a non-plasma kde desktop?

I think I may be interested in that since who the book is by etc, yes
the creator of MINIX.

A book about PHP could be useful, since I have been meaning to possibly
learn it at some stage, but also Javascript, so both books might be useful.

I don't think many people from our LUG etc will be using DOS now, and I

The two Apple product books could be of interest to people I know, but

Yes that would be good I think if you could come along to the LUG

Hi Andrew,
It's because the BIOS setting doesn't hide the drive from Linux, and
filesystems are searched by their UUIDs. It's generally unhelpful to have
two filesystems with the same UUID appearing to Linux.
One quick thing you can do is change the filesystem UUIDs using 'tune2fs'
(for ext2/3/4) or the appropriate filesystem tool.
Then change the GRUB config file in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/fstab, for
any mentions of the filesystem UUIDs, to the ones which match the disks
where those files occur.
If any entries aren't using UUIDs but are, for example, /dev/sda1 (or the
GRUB equivalent), that's not really good. You can change them to match the
disk in your tests, but the effect will be different if a drive really fails
or is unplugged. UUID is better, so use that.
RAID1 is generally good with two HDDs or two SSDs. It keeps everything
synchronised and will boot if either drive fails or is removed.
Though if you're unlucky with a drive not failing but "turning weird"
(usually meaning slow) then it's not a guaranteed solution.
With a HDD and SDD, RAID1 may not have the optimal performance
characteristics that you want. You may want to explore mdadm
--write-mostly, --write-behind, and a write-intent bitmap thay may be
internal, or located only on the SSD.
If you use RAID1 for booting, you will need to install GRUB separately on
each disk (GRUB writes extra sectors, to just one drive at a time), and make
sure the GRUB config includes the RAID1 module. It can be tricky to verify
the installation really worked, so you'll need to try unplugging each drive
to check it boots from both.
A variation (which I prefer because GRUB won't get stuck if the other disk
is semi-broken) is to install GRUB with a non-RAID boot configuration, on a
RAID1 partition, with RAID metadata at the end of the partition so the same
partition is accepted as a non-RAID read-only filesystem to GRUB.
Best,
-- Jamie

Having had one ssd fail suddenly I now want to have a backup ready at
all times. So I have cloned the new ssd disk to a new hdd. I want to
have the backup running because I want to back up data regularly so the
backup disk is always up to date. Obviously, the backup has the same
identical mbr. This is causing a problem because although I have
disabled the hdd backup disk in the bios, this is still the disk which
the system always boots into by default.
The ssd is on sata 0 and the hdd is on sata 1. ssd is always sda and hdd
is always sdb. I am starting to think that the ssd does indeed boot, but
then boots the install on the hdd. Is that possible? Likely?
I have spent many hours googling and reading up on grub2, but I cannot
understand enough to work out what to change, or even to find out
exactly what is happening. The objective is that the new ssd will always
boot by default, but the hdd backup disk will boot if the ssd fails.

You will need to install grub on the MBR of sdb.
You will need grub to have a config that tells it the correct ordering of
devices (i.e. in device.map). Grub's config will also need to specify where
the root filesystem is, either by UUID or device node name. That root
filesystem will need to live on the HDD, obviously.
You will need to boot that secondary system periodically in order to make
sure it's kept up-to-date and can still boot. You will need for the grub
config to be kept up to date (i.e. derived from the main grub config, but
not a mere copy) as new kernels are installed.
You will need for the /etc/fstab in the root filesystem of the secondary
system to refer to filesystems only on the HDD rather than their SSD
equivalents.
If that sounds like a lot of work, that's probably because it is.
I'd recommend going with either a RAID1 setup, or possibly use something
like bcache if your distribution supports it. Either will probably require
rebuilding your discs from scratch, however.
Good luck,
Alex

Yes, not good enough =) This may stop the Bios giving it an INT 13
drive and 'booting' grub from it ....
> still the disk which the system always boots into by default.
.... but, after GRUB has loaded, Linux sees the second disk anyway
and if you have a true clone (dd or equivalent) then when linux
looks for the second disk (usually by root=UUID=(something) given
in the initrd, it finds there are 2 different filesystems with the
same UUID and so either mounted as root is perfectly valid!!!.
> is always sdb. I am starting to think that the ssd does indeed boot, but

Yes, read above carefurly... grub loads from one and loads linux,
then linux mounts the root from the other =).
> exactly what is happening. The objective is that the new ssd will always
> boot by default, but the hdd backup disk will boot if the ssd fails.
As the other poster mentioned, don't bother with all that... You want
RAID1 or similar with grub on both, then grub config and kernel
config on both...
The other problem is *what* happens with a disk failure!
Mechanical disks *tend* to get iffy sectors or fail entirely,
but SSDs have been known to do some rather weird/silly things
if you are unlucky... *hopefully* they just 'fail'
or 'become readonly' but you never know... (not to say
that mechanical disks can't do that either, but still...).
Some kind of offline / 'separate' backup would be a good idea,
too...! =). Can't assume raid system not corrupted... Think
all about risks =).

Yes, read above carefurly... grub loads from one and loads linux,
then linux mounts the root from the other =).
> exactly what is happening. The objective is that the new ssd will always

The printer needed an ohm? Was the resistance to this proposal also
approximately an ohm? ;-)

1. DNS issue with old Samba (Mike Yates)

When I saw the long thread on DNS issues, I thought at first it might be
related to an issue I've had with my NAS (WD MyBook World 2) since last
March. It was caused by the upgrade of my netbook from Win8 to Win8.1,
which uses Microsoft SMB v4 (supported by samba v3.6.2) for the first time.
Any attempt by the netbook to use the Samba v3.0.34 on the NAS caused a
crash of the DNS service on the NAS and it became unreachable (bricked)
until rudely rebooted by its power plug. Unfortunately, once a Windows
device has "seen" an smb/cifs server, it remembers (in some obfuscated way)
to check it out (crashing old samba) on every boot-up. Many users have
reported this with little knowledge of the root cause. There are some
registry fixes published but they didn't work for me. However, I found, by
diagnostic cron jobs, that the NAS was still running in every way except
DNS, still able to ping a numeric IPs. I devised a cron job which tested
connectivity by a named ping every five minutes and, if that failed,
restarted the eth0 interface (restarting nmbd didn't suffice). Then I could
use the NAS with nfs (from my Ubuntu netbook but no way on Win8.1 unless
enterpise version) or ftp and, from Android, smb.

I had tried telling them that there was a serious security (root-kit)
vulnerability in all versions of samba up to 3.6.4 and suggesting that they
should at least issue a "last online update" putting a warning on the
device's admin webpage, but to no avail!
Last month found that optware, designed for the nls2 "slug" device, is
compatible with my NAS and can online-install samba v3.2.15 from their
"unstable" repository. Hey presto, Win8.1 doesn't crash that, despite
samba.org asserting that smb v4 issues were not fixed until v3.6.2. So, my
NAS is probably still vulnerable to root-kits (if they'd work in such a
simple Busybox environment?) but at least it can be "explored" from Win8.1
and doesn't disappear for five minutes whenever a Win8.1 device accesses
the LAN.
So, beware outdated embedded devices!
