Dear All,

I have a redundant HP8000 laser printer for grabs: it is very heavy
(as in 2-man lift) and in good working order, but it needs a new HP
09X toner cartridge/drum. A4/A3 printing from 2 input trays, ethernet
data input.

If anybody would like it, let me know this evening, as SWMBO has
decreed that it is going to the Frome Recycling Centre tomorrow
morning, and it is already in the car. I could drop it off in Frome or
nearby if you want it.

Best wishes,
Roger.

I could give this a home if you still have it. I'm near Bradford on Avon so presumably reasonably close to you as well.
Ashley.

Hi Sean

Yes that will be awesome if you can help out on the day, at least for a
bit, like with the previous event, Linux Live 2014.

Best Regards

Sebastian

For a private non-commercial project I need some poster-size graphics
files of maps of the UK; prefer JPG, but GIMP can convert from
other formats.
Obvs I could buy a poster-sized map and get it scanned, but does anyone
know of a good source for such files on the web ?
I'd guess that for good results on an A3-size print I would need several
thousand pixels per side.

Depends what sort of map you want - political, topographic, roads,
geological, etc. but you could start by looking at what the OS supply free:

As Andy said, it depends on what you want to get. But I guess you may want
to have a look at OpenStreetMap.

There are a few programs that allow you to export such maps in an easy way:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/SVG

The advantage of SVG is that its a vector graphics formats: it is
resolution-independent and would not loose its definition even if printed
on a skyscraper. It also allows you to add or remove elements from the
final drawing. You can then convert it to jpeg if that's really what you
want.

Hi Andy

Yes that would be very welcomed if you can come along with your lap top
running Mint, and to be there answering questions etc. 17.3 is a older
relesae though 18 is the latest, so going to upgrade soon maybe? Either
way that's fine show Mint 17.3 or maybe 18 at the event instead.

Thank You for volunteering with the event :).

When are you likely to be there, the whole day or?

Hope to meet you at the LUG meeting tommorow as well, and what times are
you likely to be there at?

Best Regards

Sebastian

Hi Fellow LUG Members

In about four weeks time, some of us from this LUG group will be holding
an event at Cafe Kino in Stokes Croft in the centre of Bristol, between
12 mid day and 6pm. It would be great and absolutely awesome, if we
could get at least two more people to help us on the day, from our LUG
group. Yes at least only two more people! Ideally at least three more!
To help with the event its irrelevant how experienced you are, or not,
with Linux and other open source software, since our LUG's event for
Linux Presentation Day ( http://linux-presentation-day.org ) is aimed
at the general public.

If you can actually make the event on the day of Saturday 22nd October
of next month, why not help us out? If you would prefer not being there
the whole six hours, you can get back to me about times you would like
to help during. If you are interested in helping on the day and I do not
already know that, please do make sure to get back to me about that, and
we would ideally like to have helpers for the whole six hours. Also I
have booked in the venue for an extra hour in the morning and an extra
hour in the evening as well. That gives the option to possibly let
people in a bit earlier once set up enough, and even run the event for a
bit longer as well, before packing up, etc.

Being there on the day is one way to help with our LUG's event, but
other ways would be for example, helping us get a large enough amount of
USB sticks for the event to be used mostly by Ubuntu, but probably one
more other distro as well. Another would be to be there with a lap top
that can be used as well to demonstrate Desktop Linux. Or maybe even,
if you just happen to have one, being there with a small enough Linux
based robot, to make things more interesting. Generally most people find
robots interesting enough or so it seems.

If you have certain Linux or open source based things from other events
for example, or in general, that no longer would like to keep, depending
on what it is, our LUG's event may be an opportunity to pass it on to
other people. If so please get back to me about that. Generally I would
like a good selection of freebies, so more than just Ubuntu and Creative
Commons, and probably Libre Office as well.

If you happen to be like me, and have certain Linux based devices that
could be interesting to show to the public, and can make the event date
and times, I am interested to know what you have. The event is about
showing Linux in a few of it's forms, however mostly focused on the
desktop and mobile. To make the event more interesting will also be
demonstrating Creative Commons.

Our LUG's event for Linux Presentation Day 2016 (
http://linux-presentation-day.org.uk ) is mentioned in certain places
online such as the event venue website, our LUG website, Whats On
Bristol website events calendar, and even Skiddle.

The Event Facebook presence ideally needs to be improved, and have much
more people ideally putting on there that they are going, or are
interested in possibly coming. Personally I do not have many Facebook
followers, and most people I have on Facebook wouldn't be interested in
this event as well, or so it seems. Please help to get the event known
about by people in general and also our LUG events Facebook:
http://facebook.com/LPDBristolUK

Our actual event description etc is on the LUG website for example, (
http://bristol.lug.org.uk ) however the description is also below:

Best Regards

Sebastian

Members of the Bristol and Bath Linux User Group are holding a Linux

and 6pm with free entry, at Cafe Kino, 108 Stokes Croft, Bristol, BS1
3RU; conveniently located in the centre of Bristol.

We will be demonstrating how easy it can be to set up a standard laptop
or desktop PC with Linux. As well as giving away DVD/USB's to try out or
install Linux, along with other fun freebies.

Since the world has become much more mobile in recent years, mobile
Linux will be demonstrated at the event in various forms.

We will also be demonstrating Creative Commons which is focussed on the
sharing of multimedia and creative works. At the event we will be giving
an idea as to what it's about, including a showcase of Creative Commons,
music, movies, and graphics.

Why not come along on the day and drop in for a bit?

Subject: [bristol] LUG Meeting at pub this Saturday and Cafe Kino next
month?

Hi

This Saturday is another one of our usual LUG meeting's in Temple Quay
at the Knight's Templar Pub near Temple Mead's train station. Where
people usually turn up between 1:30pm and then leave usually between 5
and 6pm. Where we also sit on the lower level at the back of the pub
when entering, in the left hand side corner by the plugs or near there
instead if someone else is already there.

However next month is special, because now this LUG is going to be one
of the very first UK, but also European etc, LUG's to take part in Linux
Presentation Day: http://linux-presentation-day.org.uk Cafe Kino is
booked in as the venue, see my previous details for some more general
event details, and also a request for more general event help. However
the event description is below.

Who is intending on being at the LUG meeting this Saturday I wonder and
at what times I wonder, but also Cafe Kino next month I wonder, and the
times?

Best Regards

Sebastian

I know I'm not often at the meetings, but I can make both next Sat and
Oct 22.

I have a laptop, with Mint 17.3 Rosa on it, I can bring, but for
demonstration of software that is already on it, not for installation of
a new Linux. But just being there to answer questions, I hope will be
useful.

Hi,

I have two identical HD's with different configurations versions of
Fedora, both are using a common "home" directory but both have separate
"boot" partitions using grub2.

I know it is not a good setup but was keeping one HD as a main working
Dick and the other to play with!

As I sometimes boot from a different disk and am not sure which one,
because there are two identical headings in the BIOS entries, I wanted
to have two different coloured grub menus.

I thought I had two separate "Grubs" is this true?

I have both HD's with ext4 boot partitions with the flags set BUT when I
alter one (change text colour) it alters the other!

I have tested this by setting the BIOS for only one HD and setting the
other devices to "none" and also telling it not to search for other
bootable devices.

I did use a GUI which was a bit flaky (Grub Customizer) but also did
changes manually which affected both HD's.

I have done re-installs and "grub2-mkconfig" which all works OK and
detects everything on the box and puts it in the menu.

I always thought when grub was updated it only updates the one on the HD
you are using, or does "update" look at the whole box and updates all!?

It would just be nice to understand what is going on and why I cannot
get 2 grub menus on 2 HD's.

Regards

Grub will be loaded from the disk you boot from, although it may
subsequently boot the OS installed on another disk.

If you want to know which system you're running, you could do something
like change the prompt (typically defined in /etc/profile or similar).

Allegedly, you're allowed to play (or allow someone else to play) with a
working Dick...

Oops!
So is it possible that grub updated both grubs at the same time or is that not possible!?
Will look at this later today just to make sure I am in fact booting from separate DISKS!

Well, it is definitely possible... if you request it explicitely... or if
you are not careful enough....

You tell Grub where to find its configuration files during its installation
(grub-install --boot-directory ...). That boot directory defaults to /boot.
So if you installed both Grubs from the same OS without mounting the
correct boot partitions or without overriding the defaults, your two Grubs
are loading the same configuration.

That's one reason why you shouldn't use multiple Grubs.

I wasn't, but I did see references to "install --boot-directory.

Just looked back on the terminal and what I actually did was:

booted from sda and did grub-install /dev/sda (then mkconfig)
booted from sdb into the same OS and did grub-install /dev/sdb (then
mkconfig).

It did not complain and probed the OS's OK.

That would have been the case.

So if you installed both Grubs from the same OS

Yep

>

Yep I fully accept that, all I wanted was to see which HD I was using,
but that is not really important.

My reasoning behind this requirement is that when I install a new OS, I
like to disconnect my "main" HD then upgrade the other. If I only have
one grub on that HD the other will not boot to upgrade. I now realize
this is not a good way to work and will only use one grub in future.

Thanks for the info, it is not so confusing now!

If you have to resort to windows Rufus or YUMI are great for this sort of

To make a bootable USB I seem to remember following these instructions

download CD bootable iso
isohybrid downloaded.iso
dd if=downloaded.iso of=/dev/sd[x]

isohybrid is part of the syslinux suite

As some people previously mentioned some bootable CDs, but not all, are
also hybrid CDs, these don't need the isohybrid command. In the dim and
distant past Porteus wasn't a hybrid CD maybe still isn't so needed the
isohybrid command to make the USB stick bootable.

Porteus was and probably will always remain by bootable USB stick of
choice, it's so small and fast.

As you say, not all are hybrids.

The reason I wanted to have UBCD was to use it to re-config grub as I
have replaced XP with win 7 (for specific programs I need for domestic
equipment S/W).

I have now installed Windows and changed to Grub bootloader using a
LiveDVD, and have decided not to run a stick creator from Linux.

I did try unetbootin, it complained I had to run as root, but then just
started with a blank window!

At my age, life is too short to spend more time just on a point of
principle of not using only using Linux!
