Hi,

I have a Virgin Super Hub 2ac and was wanting to keep the same lan
addresses tied to mac addresses as I had with my old ADSL netgear
router, but virgin say they it keep changing the lan address!
Is that correct?

There is a page on the 2ac that shows connected ethernet and wifi
addresses but you cannot seem to change anything except a device name,
Will have to use my old modem router to keep them the same or are they
telling me "porkies"!?

Regards

Having a static or dynamic public address is down to and controlled by the provider. The chances are the are not providing static public addresses to consumers, probably due to a shortage in IPv4 addresses. Static address tend to be used more for businesses these days.

One option is to setup an account with someone like no-dns.org and run a service that updates a hostname when your I.P. address changes, so you could have a hostname like:

phemmings.no-dns.org that resolves to your public I.P. You maybe able to configure this on your router, but if not you can easily run a service on Linux.

Hope this helps?

LAN address is nowt to do with Virgin. They control the WAN (outside) address.

LAN address is set in advanced > DHCP

Martin.

True, I read the email bit quick and assumed Peter was talking about the WAN address.

Hello Peter,

If your old router had an ethernet port for its uplink you could use
it with the super hub set to modem mode , this would mean no change to
your lan but you might have to reconfigure it to use dhcp to connect
to the super hub. If its an rj45 for a modem cable then you won't be
able to use it , or at least not without reconfiguring it with custom
routing settings to use one the ethernet ports as an uplink, not
recommended.

Cheers
Amias

I have now found the DHCP settings page!
It seems I CAN set the DHP reservations which was not what the support
man (young boy) told me, even though I tried to explain to him what I
wanted to do at least 3 times.

Will look into it again tomorrow, it looks like I can reserve them as
before.

I just looked and I can do it but I have to set a lease time which is a
maximum of a week, which is OK.

It does seem you have to use 192.168.100. if you use it as a modem and
the guest IP's for both bands get automatically set, but I do not want
to add another router unless I have to.

(Its an old Netgear 843g)

If you set lease time to zero will that be treated as for ever?
