Hi all,

Long time no post, I hope all are well and the group is still going
strong :-)

I'm wondering if anybody can help me or possibly provide pointers? I
just got off the phone with my parents as their computer is having
trouble in that it keeps locking up (requiring a hard reset). I built
the computer and installed it with dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, I now live in Liverpool so it's difficult for me provide
support.

They've gone to their local computer repair shop but the shop is
ignorant of GNU/Linux and doesn't seem capable of helping them. They've
upgraded the RAM because they thought it might be running out. (?!!!)

There are really two issues here, both of which I'm hoping to solve:

Firstly, the immediate problem of the computer locking up. This needs
solving ASAP as apparently they have government filings, etc., that need
dealing with. I suspect the problem is hardware and the solution is a
new PC and to migrate data, the main focus being emails. However, the
emails are in Evolution's local storage so it needs someone with
GNU/Linux competence to deal with that.

Secondly, there's an underlying problem of them not having support for
GNU/Linux. I live a long way away so I can only provide support over
the phone. With this problem they're now talking about wanting to
"escape Linux" for the explicit reason that they don't have support
whereas every computer shop supports Windows. Obviously, I'd like them
to continue using GNU/Linux and I think they would as well but in order
to feel happy with that, they need a company or a person they can turn
to when things go wrong like they have now.

So, I'm wondering if anybody on this list either, (a) provides
commercial GNU/Linux support and would be willing to take on another
customer or, (b) can point me in the direction of other people who
provide support?

After a quick web search, I found a company pcrepairsbristol.co.uk who
say they offer Windows *and* Linux support. They also say they've
teamed up with I Love My PC, a shop on Gloucester Road. My parents are
going to contact the shop over the next few days. However, I'm not
counting on them still offering GNU/Linux support. Regardless, the more
support options the better I think.

So, is there anyone here who might be able to help me and my
parents? :-)

Kind regards,

Bob
