Only an occasional Lugger, but if you've got any spare HDs at the end of it
I'd be very grateful!

Hi,
Having another go and can see the share (Documents Folder) locally.
I can open the file manager (Nautilus) and go to "Connect to Server" on
local PC. I can see the "Documents" icon and open it by giving my
samba password and all works OK.
When I try from my laptop, the window opens, I can see the folder from
the PC but when I try to open it I get permission denied (I have the IP
in my samba config file).
The actual error window says:
Unable to access location: Failed to mount windows share: Permission denied.
Can I assume this is OK?:
[root@study ~]# smbtree -d3

Can I assume the router does not interfere with my local lan or do I
have to set it to allow samba!?
Can I assume it is authentication settings in my samba config on the PC
or some other place!!?
Thanks

Hello James,
I see a lot of people talking about how to do it back in 2011 but
nothing since and nobody posting anything that proves it helps.
i would guess partitioning tools are doing this automatically , it
seems gparted does.
BTW check that samsung ssd has the latest firmware , there where some
trim bugs with those.
Cheers

Hi
There were some emails to this to do with putting Linux distros on a new UEFI of mine. Since the last LUG meeting (since I been doing other things etc), I still have a test install of Ubuntu 15.04. The plan is to multi boot the laptop with Windows and more than one Linux distro.
My test install of Ubuntu can be booted up, but to begin with have to hold down esc for long enough or Windows will get booted up instead. Ubuntu points to the Windows UEFI I think, and both are installed in UEFI mode it seems, and apparently not meant to try and mix UEFI and legacy mode OS installs. Saying that legacy mode has not been enabled anyway, but yes secure boot has been disabled.
When esc is held down for long enough the Startup Menu comes up, with options for System Information, System Diagnostics, System Recovery, and importantly this is also the menu with options for a Boot Device Options. On this particular laptop the BIOS Setup seems quite limited really in what it can actually do, for example according to the Ubuntu UEFI page was apparently meant to disable fast boot, but I don't even get options for things like that, on that HP Pavilion x360 convertible.
Once F9 has been selected as in the boot options, the boot manager comes up with options for the Windows OS Boot Manager (UEFI) and the Ubuntu OS Boot Manager (UEFi) and a Boot From EFI File option. If the Windows option is selected it loads up the HP logo screen and Windows then boots up. If the Ubuntu option is selected it loads up Grub and as would expected from there can load up Ubuntu or even Windows. However the big question is: Can I get it to come up with Grub first when the computer is turned on or rebooted, and then to be used to load up Linux or Windows, and if so how? Someone at the LUG last time thought it should be able to be done, and I agree, but how? Or is this just an example of newer is not always better? I mean on a old BIOS computer this would have generally been quite easy to do, to have Grub coming up first, but yes it's a different ball game with UEFI.
Thanks in advanced for any help.
Regards
Sebastian

Hi
It's another LUG meeting tomorrow at our usual Knights Templar Pub in Temple Quay near Temple Meads Train Station and Broadmead.
Who is intending on being there? I'll probably be there about 2:30 or about 3pm.
For anyone that does not know the meeting is very informal, with an opportunity to show or give away interesting Linux/tech related things even if wanting to, or just come along for a chat etc. I have another device that runs Linux :), that I can show tomorrow. We usually sit on the lower level at the back of the pub when entering it in the left hand side corner with the plugs, or near there instead if someone is already there. People turn up and leave when they decide to, with most attendees usually being there about 2pm, and leaving between 4pm and 5:30pm.

You need to install the package efibootmgr package and you can use this to
select the default boot ordering from Linux.
There is a windows command line utility that does the same kind of thing,
but windows.
My EFI BIOS also allows you to change the default, but I wouldn't be
surprised if that was optional for the BIOS to support changing it.

Ok thanks :) I'll look into that, and I assume the other two distros I would like psyichal installs of have the same package or something similar, in the repos at least. I'll probably do a progress update on this list, next week or something like that.

Hi,
Does anyone have a feel for whether SSD alignment is something that
needs careful attention with modern SSDs and a recent version of Linux?
The last time I dealt with partitioning an SSD was several years ago,
and I remember needing to be careful about aligning the partitions along
4KiB boundaries, and that aligning along erase block size boundaries was
also important. I had to do this manually at the time, as the various
tools had not been updated to support SSDs and the defaults would give
incorrect alignment.
Now I have a very new Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD which I want to
partition, so I can install Ubuntu on it. I have read conflicting
reports online about whether alignment is something you still need to
bother with. The received wisdom seems to be that you should just align
partitions to 1 MiB boundaries, and that you probably don't need to
worry anyway since most modern partitioning tools do this anyway.
As far as I can tell, the erase block size should not matter for
partition alignment (I don't understand why it would, anyway, since for
SSDs it is so much larger than the sector size).
If anyone has any experience or thoughts on this, I would be interested
to hear!
Thanks,
James

Regards
Sebastian

You need to install the package efibootmgr package and you can use this to
select the default boot ordering from Linux.
There is a windows command line utility that does the same kind of thing,
but windows.
My EFI BIOS also allows you to change the default, but I wouldn't be
surprised if that was optional for the BIOS to support changing it.

Ok thanks :) I'll look into that, and I assume the other two distros I would like psyichal installs of have the same package or something similar, in the repos at least. I'll probably do a progress update on this list, next week or something like that.

Subject: [bristol] SSD alignment

Hi,
Does anyone have a feel for whether SSD alignment is something that
needs careful attention with modern SSDs and a recent version of Linux?
If anyone has any experience or thoughts on this, I would be interested
to hear!
Thanks,
James

Hi,
I have now got Samba to run OK on the PC with Samba password and can see
and open my kmy files OK.
(I am also running enforcing Alex!)
My PC is at 192.168.0.2
Router at 192.168.0.1
Laptop at 192.168.0.4
They are all allocated with mac address on the router (Netgear DGN2200v4)
I was still having a problem seeing the server from the laptop and have
disabled its firewall (temporally) with no effect but just noticed
errors on start up with nmb on PC.
It gives an IP address (192.168.13.2) I am not using! and its all a bit
above my knowledge level.
I could not see anything on the laptop but now get an index with the
"Documents" folder link (as configured) but it does not open.
Apologies, I am putting relevant output below as emails with
attachments do not seem to get posted:

Workstations are easy to build from parts, so that wouldn't be an issue.
But really I'm looking at getting a laptop, the portability really is
a necessity. Reading reviews about entroware, they say that the mouse pad
isn't great, which is a shame.

Hi,
I decided to try to get samba running on my PC before checking it from a
laptop.
I am running Fedora 22 but used this for 20:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/40353/how-to-enable-samba-share-for-a-specific-directory-fedora-20/
I did a smb//192.168.0.2 from the file manager to connect to the server
and I could see my folder and files in /home/peter/Documents/.
I have a kmymoney file in that directory tand can open it using samba
but it is an old file!
My current file was in my "home" directory so I moved it to
/home/peter/Documents/ and reconnected the server where I can see now
see the icons for both files BUT I can only open the older one!
I checked kmymoney can open both files from "Documents" and the file
permissions and UID's are the same but kymoney reports:
File
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=192.168.0.2,share=documents/May2015.kmy
not found.
Any ideas as to why it cannot be opened?
Regards

Hi -
It depends what you mean by "portability"; if you mean "using on the move,
probably on battery power, e.g. whilst on a train", then a NUC is almost
certainly of no use to you. If, on the other hand, you just mean "something
I can sling in a backpack and take between home and my permanent place of
work/study", then James' suggestion merits investigation. You'd also be
able to trivially use whatever HID devices suit your needs (though you might
want to buy two or more examples of each, to save you slinging those in the
backpack too).

Alex

I have now noticed SELinux is reporting a problem, it was a bit late
last night!!:
SELinux is preventing smbd from read access on the file May2015.kmy.
Plugin: catchall
you want to allow smbd to have read access on the May2015.kmy fileIf you
believe that smbd should be allowed read access on the May2015.kmy file
by default.
You should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Allow this access for now by executing:
# grep smbd /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp
I am not sure why this happened but allowing the access as above sorted
it out OK.
I know many on the list prefer not to run SElinux, but I prefer to leave
it in permissive mode so I can see alerts without it stopping things
working. As I had not touched it since a clean Fedora install it was
running in enforcing mode, which I have now changed!

FYI, permissive mode doesn't enforce anything, it just logs what it would do
if it /were/ in enforcing mode. It's primarily of use in setup or debugging
tasks. Which is fine, as long as you aren't under the misapprehension that
permissive mode is gaining you anything in terms of additional security.

It's primarily of use in setup or debugging
tasks. Which is fine, as long as you aren't under the misapprehension that
permissive mode is gaining you anything in terms of additional security.

entroware looks interesting, I'd far rather support a company providing
linux laptops, even if it does cost a bit more.
@Amias, thanks for the offer I might take you up on that.

If you were after a workstation (rather than a laptop), then the Intel NUC <http://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/nuc/overview.html> might suit (though perhaps not if you want chunky graphics).
AFAIK they come with no OS, so you can put what you like onto them.
(Full disclaimer, I work for Intel, though on SW, not sales or hardware :-))

Hi all,
this is a little OT, but I'm looking for a laptop I can program on. I don't
want to pay for windows (out of principle as well as hopefully cost). I
would like 15 inch ish, hardwearing, light ish and a large (512GB) SSD.
Who makes good linux laptops at the moment? I've not heard anything about
think pads for years, are they still any good?
Thanks, Max B

Hello Max,
I recently had a go at this and whilst i hate windows with a passion i
decided i wanted a decent choice of laptop and sensible prices, you
will pay more for a machine with linux than a windows licence sadly.
Also the linux support is meaningless for someone who knows what they
are doing IMHO.
In the end i went for a Dell Inspiron 7737 , which came with windows 8
and i just replaced it with ubuntu
which works pretty much perfectly with it (switching 3d graphics for
steam, reliable wifi , suspend , media buttons, touchscreen ,
touchpad, virtualisation) with only a bit of fiddling. Ubuntu
occasionaly breaks this support in updates but on the whole it just
works. Its also as well built as an apple machine which is rare.
I don't really use the touchscreen much and the lack of firewire is a
bit annoying. You are welcome to come
and have a play if you want to try it.

Hi,
I have upgraded to Fedora 22 and lost my nice theme I had on Fedora 20.
I thought I had done everything but it still did not work.
I found this and got it going:
http://jadelinux.com/fedoratips/fixgrub2.html
What I did not do was this:
echo "GRUB_THEME=\"/boot/grub2/themes/system/theme.txt\"" >>
/etc/default/grub
What does this ACTUALLY do, as I had already put the "GRUB_THEME=" in
/etc/default/grub!?
Thanks
