I'm at the Knights Templar, in the corner on the slightly raised section. With a sign.

Hi

LUG Meeting this Saturday afternoon at our usual Knights Templar Pub in
Temple Quay near Temple Meads Station, but with the Christmas menu
probably available as well:
https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/food/christmas-meal People usually turn
up about 1:30 or about 2, and leave about 5 to 5:30. We usually sit on
the lower level at the back of the pub when entering it, near the plugs
in the left hand side corner.

I will probably be there about 3, but who else is intending on being
there and at what time?

Regards

Sebastian

On a Debian system (for our purposes today, the same as Ubuntu):

$ apt-cache search ralink
firmware-ralink - Binary firmware for Ralink wireless cards

So now you need to try something like:

$ sudo apt-get install firmware-ralink

...and see how you get on.

Hi,

After inserting the dongle ( would suggest its usb ) open up the terminal
and do:

$ lsusb

after hitting enter you should see something similar too

~$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 8087:07dc Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 08ff:2810 AuthenTec, Inc. AES2810
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0c45:6449 Microdia
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 413c:8197 Dell Computer Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0461:4e22 Primax Electronics, Ltd
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

you could do this of course before inserting to compare the difference as I
would imagine the chipset will appear not the name of the dongle ..

then you could run lsmod and check the list for a loaded kernel driver...

also ifconfig -a will show if all is good, after which you should be able
to configure it...

Hello folks, I'm a bit of a nivice with Linux. I dont have any problems
downloading software from the Ununtu software center but I don't know
what to do with software that comes with a disk. With windows the
'setup.exe' files does it all for you.
Ive got a mini wifi dongle that I want to use with an older laptop it
comes with a disk. So I put the disk into the DVD drive and find the
'tar.bz2' I extract it with the Archive Manager and thats where I get
stuck. What do I do next>

Can you please help?

Thank you in advance

Firstly, look to see if there is a "readme" file or similar containing instructions on what to do.

If not, tell us what files are in the tar.bz2 archive - otherwise, we don't have a clue either :)

You can get a list of files in the archive by running "tar tjvf <filename>.tar.bz2".

However, I'm surprised that the dongle comes with Linux drivers on a CD. Most hardware is supported directly by the Linux kernel without external drivers. I'd suggest searching for your dongle make and model number, plus "linux" to see if there are any instructions or comments online elsewhere.

G'day!

Most likely the tar file contains the driver source code so you will
need to compile it yourself.

Hopefully there is a README file in the extracted directory that has
instructions. Either that or an INSTALL file, or something similar. They
might have a ".txt" extension but not necessarily. The files should have
generic instructions about how to compile the software. Most likely it
will ask you to run "configure" and/or "make" commands.

Either way, you're going to have to use the command line in order
actually compile it so you'll need to be familiar with the common shell
commands like 'cd' and 'ls', etc.

You'll also need to install the Ubuntu build environment which allows
you to compile software:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

You might also need to install the Linux kernel headers which are needed
to compile kernel drivers:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

As David says, often you can just plug something in and it will work. If
not, often there are pre-compiled packages that you can download and
install.

Good luck!

Shane.

Hi

Have you checked it has not already been recognised and is ready to
use? Ubuntu based distributions have a fairly broad set of drivers out
of the box so it's iunlikely you will need to do anything more than
plug it in.

Hi,
Assuming you have a running Ubuntu OS on the PC/laptop then the most simple way to sort this out is to first identify the hardware (WiFi dongle).? To do this type "lsusb" on the command line and look for a line with any reference to the name of your dongle. The important part is the "ID" alpha numeric part.
Then search for any docs to confirm if the hardware already has the driver in the kernel, if so it should work.? If you are not sure,? post the lsusb here and someone will help to confirm if it can be used without compiling a new driver.
Good luck

^ This. Look in kernel log files (traditionally /var/log/messages) when the
device is plugged in to look for confirmation that it's been detected and a
driver loaded.

Failing that, look for drivers and utilities packaged by your distribution.

Hello all ,

good point , this pretty much invalidates the reason most people want
these routers , to avoid binary blobs in their network.

I have found that my BT HomeHub does not support SNMP. However I believe
that
for c. ?80 I could buy an ASUS N900 Wireless Router, which has a (Windows)
client which gives the usage info I was after. Not quite sure if it also
supports
SNMP, so I could access it from Linux instead.

I haven't decided yet how badly I need to solve this problem, so I'll
hold off making
that change for now.

Hi,

Because the weather I decided to look at a (long) outstanding task that
I can never ground to doing!

I am using this:

http://bscable.info/from-vhs-to-h-264-video-format/

which is not old, but I cannot produce a raw file.

I have Fedora 22 and am using an easycap stick for video and "mic in"
for better audio quality.

After resolving a long outstanding problem with audio failing (due to me
not removing and re-inserting when changing vlc settings), I can now
play and hear videos when playing via vlc.

I can also set vlc to convert into mp4 OK but want raw data to "play"
with on another application.

When I set vlc to convert and "dump raw input" I do not get a red button
on the GUI so it does not record.

Any ideas as to why I don't I cannot do it?

Regards

The company / group behind this router have asked the debian team at
looking at a port for this one.

personally I think OpenWRT would be best suited,, there are binary blobs
required for this one as well as a mixup on the CPU serial given in the
debian thread that points to a PPC core ( Freescale ) vs an Arm core.

Hello Peter,

Ffmpeg or mencoder do video conversations on the command line, once you
have worked out the options its easy to put in a bash for loop to go
through the whole lot. I would pipe the output of each command to a
separate text file so you can check it later if you run in to problems.

Something that hasn't come up in this discussion of routers with custom firmware is that they generally (never?) have support for ADSL modem chipsets, so you'll actually want two devices - one with stock firmware (possibly an old or basic model) acting as a dumb modem or router and another running a custom firmware to gather statistics.

Alex

Seconded. My old ZyXEL router from 2002 did, but it was SoHo kit and cost
over ?200 back in the day. SNMP support is unlikely in most modern consumer
routers, sadly.

An alternative is to look for a way to get a command line or shell on your
chosen router model (e.g. http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=1053.0
describes browsing http://router/setup.cgi?todo=debug and authenticating in
order to enable telnet until the next router reboot) and obtaining traffic
statistics that way. A practical note: some routers run out of memory and
reboot or cease passing traffic when you do this.

Seconded. There's a reason SNMP has the backronym "Security's Not My
Problem".

Hi

It sounds like a router with a custom firmware on might be a suitable
alternative.

I have Virgin Media Fibre. I was supplied with a VM Superhub. Which I
run in modem only mode. To this i connect my own supplied wireless
router (Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N). This is running DD-WRT firmware. This
allows me to see at a glance the UL and DL totals per day for each
month. It does also have a live bandwidth monitoring for the last 2
minutes as well.

I appreciate that this does not meet your requirement for hourly usage.

I have not experience of other customer router firmware (Tomato, etc)
but perhaps one of these might cover your hourly usage requirement.

Regards

Roger

Hi

A better router, or a router with custom firmware is definately a
possibility as already suggested. Also you could use something like IPCop
or a custom DNS provider might be able to do this for you.

Check the settings in your router's the web interface, or BT's information
on the model number of the homehub router to see if it supports SNMP.

Then use cacti{1} or something similar to generate pretty graphs or reports.

If it doesn't support SNMP, and a lot of bundled basic home kit{2} don't
any more, then it should be fairly easy/cheap to buy a replacement router
(~?20 for just adsl to ethernet, ~?50 if you want wireless too) which does
support SNMP, but check the router spec for SNMP support.

SNMP versions 1 and 2c are much easier to set up, (but less secure, at
least change the default community strings from 'publc' and 'private', and
block SNMP access from the internet, SNMP can be used as a fairly potent
application vector for a DDoS attack)

Footnotes:
{1}
[ In my experience, cacti is fiddly to set up for anything other network
hardware ]
{2}
[ I recently upgraded to FTTC, and the ISP supplied router web interface
doesn't even let you change the default network from 192.168.0.0/24
Fortunately linux is more than happy to connect directly using PPPoE ]

Regards,

HP are normally pretty good with Linux
Replacing your equipment would be cheap advice but it depends on how
badly/quickly you need it to work. I have new HP Deskjet wireless all-in-on
type thing which I happily scan and print from in opensuse
A quick google brings up the fact that Canon particularly don't seem to
like linux, and don't offer any help for it.

Hello Mik,

Sorry to hear you are unwell mate , i hope your hand gets better soon.

I think you might have been unlucky with that scanner , pretty much
all the other LiDE models are reported as working in OpenSuSE
https://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Scanners

I have an Canon LiDE 200 here and i just plugged it in and ran
simple-scan and it just worked on my ubuntu 15.10.

Personally i have found SuSE distros to be a world of pain and strange
quirks , i would seriously recommend switching to ubuntu because
it just flipping works with pretty much everything, this is mostly
because of the large use volume and active support forums.
You could try using a liveCD to make sure its ok without risking your setup.

I think scanner support has started to take a back seat in the linux
world because mobile phone cameras are mostly good enough to scan
documents so you might find that an easier way, just watch the lighting.

Cheers
Amias

For what its worth, I've a Canoscan LIDE 25 scanner, and it works
straightforwardly with SimpleScan, but only when plugged into the
combined ESATA/USB port. SimpleScan cannot see it if it is plugged in to
any other standard USB ports. I've Linux Mint 17.

Hi all - I'm on BT for broadband, with a BT HomeHub router. Is it
possible to replace
the Homehub with an alternative device which measures and reports broadband
usage across all devices, and is such a device available e..g. from Dabs
or Maplin ?

I'd like to be able to see the total DL usage in the last hour, for example.
I have a variety of devices attached to the router, e.g. Windows, Linux,
Android.
I don't necessarily want the usage per device, just the total for all
devices.

Thanks,
Andrew M

Andrew,

The short answer is 'yes'. Depending on your connection...

If it's ADSL then *ANY* router that has an ADSL modem in it (and most of
them are 2+ capable too) will 'just work' if you configure the settings (BT
have a guide on this). If it's VDSL (FttC) then you need to ensure you get a
router with a VDSL modem in it. Most VDSL connections are sold as "BT
Infinity" or "BT Fibre".

Check which type of connection you have, then grab a router that has the
right modem internally. Alternatively if you happen to be on VDSL and can
find someone who used to be and still has their OpenReach external modem,
then you could plug that into any Ethernet-equipped router and it would work
just as well through the WAN port (in fact I did this with my FttC
connection and my old Draytek Ethernet router for a few years).

to replace the Homehub with an alternative device which measures and reports
broadband usage across all devices, and is such a device available e..g.
from Dabs or Maplin ?

I'd like to be able to see the total DL usage in the last hour, for example.
I have a variety of devices attached to the router, e.g. Windows, Linux,
Android.
I don't necessarily want the usage per device, just the total for all
devices.

Thanks,
Andrew M
