Thanks Alex, I have now resolved this, my findings are included for
prosperity (IE might save someone some dosh if they want a moto G charger):

I had to go to Cribb's this morning so decided to sort this out!

Visited Tesco and tried my 2 (CE) chargers on their phones (not Moto G)
and they both worked. Tried another micro charger on my Moto G and it
worked!

I thought a standard USB charger used with Motorola lead would be best
and bought one from another shop after confirming it worked OK.

Got home and received the following "Standard" email from Motorola:

"We would like to inform that the Motorola Moto G has been only provided
with a USB cable for data transfer and charging, but other socket
chargers can be used, even from other brands, if they are CE rated.

However, we cannot guarantee the compatibility with all devices on the
market, and if those chargers do not work, it is possible they are
incompatible with your device."

So there you are, NOT all micro "CE" micro chargers are the same and
there is NO guarantee they will work. It was lucky I had 2 spare but I
thought the risk of both not working was low, just shows yer!

My guess is that the micro USB sockets do not quite conform to the
standard or the one on the phone doesn't. I had read that the quality
of these can be a bit borderline!

Late to the party, but did you check the lead apart from the
charger(s)? I have gone through a number of duff USB leads, OTG or
no.

The USB lead works OK.

Just to summerize:

The supplied USB to micro USB worked with TV and my laptop, initially I
did not have a USB charger but the lead now also works with the new charger.
Both micro USB (1.5 and 2amp) do not work with the phone but another one
in Tesco did work OK.
Both my original chargers work with Android TV dongle and raspberry Pi.
